What? Whose post?

Perhaps this thread should be locked and all opinions set aside until further facts are available. Sorry, but I thought I was just serving up some news, complete with citations and links etc., and now this has become rather contentious.. for no apparent reason.

I do not know which post he is refering to either.

And yes this thread has crossed from new update to contentious for no apparent reason. Maybe it was something the attacker had for breakfast.

I guess I'm responsible for turning this thread in a new direction, but really, all I did was question some information that seems to greatly depart from reality. I'd like to think of APUG as a friendly place for discussion and exchange of ideas and I'd like to keep thinking of it in that way, but I won't shy away from pointing out when information is questionable. Nor, I hope, would I react coarsely should something I offer here receive the same treatment in a civil manner.

I think leibovitz has gone to crap ever since she went digital, i dont find much skill in her work, seems more like a pictorialist to me, all thoughts and no skill

NICE SUBJECT CHANGER!

I also agree that she seems to be way too theory-based these days. I've thought that since the American Masters documentary.

The $24 million comes due tomorrow. There should be more news in the papers soon.

huh?
grass suit ... bathtub filled with milk ?

pictorialist and all theory THESE days ?

I haven't seen every picture she has done, especially lately, but wasn't the bath tub with milk thing about 30-years ago? With Whoopie Goldberg? (JEEZ, This thread seems to breed argumentation!....IS ANNIE REALLY WORTH IT?)

I can agree with the pictorialism idea as well, especially of you consider that pictorialism is the presentation of a romanticized ideal---something she has done in her own way for a very long time, considering a large portion of her work is of celebrities and people who, she said herself, know how to perform in front of a camera.

Theory-based simply means that someone spends more time thinking about their work and conceptualizing instead of actually producing the work. She certainly spends a lot of time thinking about her work, and yes, I think her most innovative days are probably behind her....unless she can figure out these financial problems. Like I said in another thread about this, these problems have GOT to affect her creativity in a big way. She can't ignore them anymore.

Grass suit? I don't think I know that one.

Then don't post IIRC stuff, state your sources before you post and use citations/links.

Your post #11 re Windows and Starbucks just proves my point. Siriusly... ;-)

I guess I was "arguing" with the two of you here...

You can disagree without being disagreeable.

I was give the poster some background that I picked up from this website, so that the poster would know were the $24 million debt came from. The bottom line is that she made some bad financial choices. I avoided comments about her work or her style.

Does she still own the cameras or did the lender take those too?

hi tom

i am sure there was some sort of weird theory about whoopie and the milk
and david byrne and his grass suite

wasn't being argumentative just kind of goofy

i dunno know about her cameras ...
i have a feeling she has them at the pawn shop
and maybe that's the reason why her assistants are doing the work
under her direction

After listening to the report, it seems the Art Capital Group that is holding her work and real estate as collateral hooked her into an unfair contract and is deliberately preventing her from selling real estate to pay her debt in order to get the rights to her old, current, and future work.

Bottom line: If you swim in a tank full of loan sharks, don't be surprised if you get bitten!

In the past if you did not pay, you got your knees broken. Now the merely steal your life.

She was a notorious spendthrift - even with an annual income in the millions (or tens of millions) of dollars, she spent money in a way that would make Michael Jackson blush.

You just can't do that, no matter who you are. She did, and then the crunch came...'nuff said.

After her escapade with Miley Cyrus re: the Vanity Fair cover (borderline kiddie porn, IMHO) I'm not too impressed with her idea of ethics...let the facts come out fairly in this particular episode but -- well, she's of a generation that played pretty fast and loose with ethics to begin with.

Google it...she shot a 15 year old girl clad in nothing but a bedsheet.

I'm no prude, but a middle aged lesbian doing that is akin to a middle aged straight male photographer shooting that.

In any case, the main point IMO is that an unsustainable lifestyle caught up to this person. I take no schadenfreude in that - it really is too bad.

Colin, don't forget that the magazine does the brief. Annie likely gets a little more leeway creatively because of her history, she delivers...but you're way out of line with that kind of talk re kiddie porn.

"a middle-aged lesbian"
. So!? Your point being?
Annie is skilled and professional and irrespective of her sexual preferences (something that does not belong in this forum) she knew how to handle the shoot creatively and sensitively as per the brief given to her.

the cover shot was still kind of creepy for a 14year old girl
who is the role model of millions of 7 year olds.
almost as creepy as her last music video awards appearance ...
i don't think it was AL, i think it was the publicists trying
to stir controversy ...

And the washed up has been father of hers seems to approve of it all. I wouldn't lay that one strictly on AL either.

Let's clear a few things up.

First, her sexual orientation is an issue ONLY because she would look upon a nude girl in a more similar way to a straight male photographer -- and please don't suggest for a moment that THAT scenario wouldn't cause an uproar.
Any suggestion of discrimination based on orientation is offensive and unacceptable to me...my apologies for not articulating as much in the first place.

As to comparisons with child pornography...well, my moral compass tells me that sexualizing a child for financial purposes is wrong. That's purely my take on the situation.
