Last issue of Photo Techniques

I got my issue of Photo Techniques yesterday and it included the announcement that it's the last issue. Subscribers will receive Digital Photo Pro for the rest of their terms. Glad I didn't renew for longer. :-(

Not a word about it I could find on here, either. Of course all print media is suffering with the Internet, but I'll miss it. It was a shadow of its former self but still had a good issue from time to time. In the heyday of Darkroom Techniques and Darkroom and Creative Camera Techniques it was a positively superb magazine and resource.

Farewell DT, C&D, CC&DT, and PT.

Say it isn't so. I have let all of my other photo mag. subs. go as they were all digital (and mostly digital gear review). This was the only mag. that gave decent analog info any more. This is really bad.

They even have an article in the current issue "Handcrafting Light-Sensitive Photographic Paper"

PS I have most of the old issues saved going back to about 1980.

Yep, you have the current issue. Go to the front and read "From the Editor" and the blurb on the opposite page.

Wow, and I was thinking of re-subscribing because they were carrying more analog-based articles I was interested in. If anyone has the last several issues and wants to sell them to me, I might be interested, though.

This is devastating news. I thought I could always rely on Photo Techniques to inspire me and supply me with ideas, and I was always impressed with the quality of its format and production. If anyone has suggestions for a print-based alternative that will allow me to keep paying my mortgage, I'd like to hear from you. I still subscribe to Pop Photo, just to make sure I'm not missing the most recent developments in the industry but it is hardly satisfying.

Thats bad news, though I haven't read it in years. My money is just too scarce to spend on magazines that are primarily digital, which is why I stopped subscribing to View Camera many years ago. It sucks that I miss some analog articles, but I can't afford to pay a subscription for a magazine if I'm only getting an article.

A different magazine, the British magazine was excellent but eventually merged with Camera which had formerly been Camera User.

The US publication Darkroom Techniques was quite different with some superb articles, I still have copies with John sexton's articles on Tmax films. I never saw the US Photo Technique on sale here in the UK,

PT used to be a wonderful magazine... I still have copies from the 80's and 90's. Sometime in the early 2000's digital started creeping in, and I let my subscription drop.

I'll be interested in what they say. I'm probably in the same boat. I say that because it depends on "Digital Photo Pro" which I am not familiar with. If it covers hybrid techniques it might be of interest to me.

Just received an email - they said they'll process my refund. I wonder how many such requests they'll receive.

It's just as well, I suppose. The current incarnation, "photo technique", was a ghost of its glory days under other names. I've been slowly reducing the number of periodicals I receive, and honestly I won't miss this. I'll look through an issue of "Digital Photo Pro" on a news stand sometime.

Sorry, I got confused when I read this. The only magazine I remember by a name like that was Photo-Technik which was a magazine put out by Linhof I think. My dad used to have these in his office when he was working for Kodak. I remember Darkroom Techniques, but didn't realize they changed the name to Photo Technique. The only magazines I've read in 12 years or so, has been B&W Magazine, and few issues of Shutterbug. ( I'm such a stick in the mud )

In the beginning was Darkroom Techniques. It went through several changes of name and focus over the years, the final one being photo technique

I believe the name was changed from Darkroom and Creative Camera Techniques to Photo Techniques around 1995.

This used to be my favourite rag. I started reading it in the mid 90's, and have back issues back to their first year. It was a great magazine. I learnt a lot from their excellent articles, especially those written by Phil Davis. I subscribed 'til '05 then stopped as I wasn't interested in reading about digital as it slowly took over content. I get a kick out of reading articles from years ago in my darkroom while waiting form carbon tissue to expose. There was so much meat on them bones back then! The only mag I subscribe to now it LensWork, and buy View Camera off the rack from local book store.
PT had a good run.

I actually subscribed to Digital Photo Pro before my primary interest turned to film photography. It is one of the few digital-oriented magazines that actually discusses photography technique instead of being simply a wankfest over the latest gear (Shutterbug, Popular Photography). I recommend it highly, *IF* you have an interest in digital.

I have only an "I might get a DSLR for the family snapshots and very low light" interest in digital, but that might be enough reason to get the magazine. I suppose I can try an issue or two.

Sorry to hear this, but not really surprised. I am still working on fleshing out my collection of mid 80's to 00 editionns of this once great publication. Tons of good articles and ideas over that era.

Sell me a set of CD of all of those years html indexed, and with good quality scans in high definition to suit the quality of the pritnting they used to do , and I would fork out $100 for it.

I just tried to buy the last five issues (only ones I don't have as my subscription ran out last spring) and I couldn't because I'm not a current subscriber and don't have a login. If I were a current subscriber, I'd have them, wouldn't I? So why put up a barrier for potential new subscribers (too late now) by not allowing non-subscribers to buy back issues? Erg.

I bought Photo Techniques to have the late David Vestal's articles for add to my teaching material. Vestal was just great.

For those who remember American Photographer was great until they became American Photo. Camera sucked (though I have all the issues}, Aperture has been moribund for decades.
