Clearly you need to go back to skool. The so called "grain" you are looking at isn't. You need to look between the "grain" or in the case of LF beside the "grain". More correctly because it is in German it's termed Partikel Zwischenraum, or PZ. 35mm PZ is random and sloppy, sometimes edgy and sometimes just cliche. Large format Partikel Zwischenraum is ordered and vertically correct, but often detached and a little boring. If you look closely at your scans and you should really being doing your own scanning and let your butler buttle, you'll notice that LF PZ sport non hipster beards. It's just fundamental.

just thinking aloud
has anyone used bacon grease
as a fixer?
i was reading old pop photography magazines
from the 40s
and it mentions using bacon grease as a fixer substitute
i never use fixer ( same with jeeves )
and i dont really eat bacon, but i have friends that do.
is this worth pursuing?
will it make my prints extra grainy?
if bacon doesnt work will coconut oil
i have a vat and cant use it up before it goes bad

Thanks For All Your Help!

i want to thank everyone who helped me try to solve my problem.
i have decided to give up on large format photography altogether
too much of a hassle to try to force a giant negative to behave like
a smaller one. what was i thinking listening to that blog guy.

there is a local place that takes cameras and sells them
on eboo, so i will just that. if you search ebay in the next few weeks
and come across 12x20 cameras, 11x14 cameras
8x10, 5x7, 4x5 all from the same seller, not as a collection ...
with probably 70 lenses from 48mm to 1800mm, and
probably 200 film holders, it was my stuff

im going back to using a penft and tryx and ansco 1:9
it seemed to work for years before i got into large format.

tanks again

Final solution: Expose an 11x14 negative and develop it in ansco 1:9; photograph that with the Pen FT on much outdated film; develop in coffee, print on 30 year-old paper; develop in tea and Ansco 130; scan on office copier and then posterize the scan to print out (again on office copier) to 4' x 8' assemblage. Voila! A large/small/alternative/kitchen-sink/photo project with commercial potential...suitable for corporate boardroom display.

Or just use your phone to take the picture and use one of the ever-growing number of apps that make things look like you cared about your photography and have it printed by some on-line service.

Waddya' think?

Poor John,

We feel very sorry for you and will proceed with giving you lots of attention now, so that you can feel the support of the community - BUT not until you reach at least 500 posts.

Everything is matter of compromise. Get a gatling gun and put a Pen F on each barrel.
You could get a burst of 600 shots per minutes. But you will need a tripod, an assistant to feed the rolls. You might have to use bacon to grease the gatling. No need to eat it.
Put this on a turret on top of your truck and you are good to go.
Oh. Dońt shoot and drive at the same time.

I've seen film that must have been developed by monkeys, but never used bananas as a developer. Do you mix them in coffee? Or can i mix them with strawberries for smoother tones? It seems like wood would help with grain a bit, maybe quarter sawn oak? Might have to try this. John, if you have that many lenses, maybe you should cart tham over to Grimes had have an LF gatling gun made out of them. Just think, shooting 3000 8*10s a minute! Talk about spray and pray.
