Hi!

I'm trying to figure out which lamp should be used on a Durst CLS450 Laborator 900. I'm not sure of the exact model, so I've attached a few pictures to this post and hope it will help.

I've previously thought that a 250W 24V lamp should do it (as that was the previous lamp, I think) but after plugging in one to the enlarger tonight the lamp was fried (the smell was pretty offensive, so I unplugged it).

This was the lamp that was fried tonight:

Is this not a correct lamp for this enlarger? Or did I plug it in incorrectly?

I realize that I plugged in the enlarger straight into the wall socket, maybe this was the issue?

I'd love to use this enlarger (my current LPL C7700 is decent, but I'd like to have two working enlargers in the community darkroom) more but not if it keeps frying my lamps...

ELC 250W 24V is the correct lamp - The one you link to appears to be the correct one.

You should have a thick cable going to a TR450 power supply - If you are missing this, do NOT plug the cable directly in to a wall socket.
The power supply also provides power to the fan and backlights behind the CMY dials.

Can you post a picture of your power supply box? (TR450 or similar).

The supply box is under the table so I didn't think of taking a picture of it. I'm 90% sure there's a thick cable going from the enlarger down to the box, but I'll verify next time I'm in the darkroom.

That has cleared up one concern I had..

I would suggest replacing the ceramic block shown in your third image - You may need to partially dismantle the covers, but that would give you a chance to clean out dust.
The contacts inside the holder get burnt over time, and this could have been source of the smell - Look in the telephone directory and try to find an electrical wholesaler that stocks low voltage lights and fittings. You'll find them a lot cheaper than the likes of Clas Ohlson, and the staff will be better qualified & experienced in giving good advice.

If you can't find a suitable holder, I could source one in the UK and pop it in the post to (at cost).

Some info on lamp socket replacement here: (there was a url link here which no longer exists)
