I have a 6 speed manual with a short shifter in a highly modified and supercharged truck and a 7 speed DSG automatic with paddle shifters in an aftermarket tuned and turbocharged Audi S4. There is no way in any life I could shift that manual as fast or accurately as I can those paddles on the Audi.

I love manual transmissions too but a good well maintained high dollar German DSG trans is just mind blowing better in every way. There is a reason Formula One went that type long ago, I wish the truck had it.

My boss has an Audi. The transmission blew and he was hit with a 4 THOUSAND dollar bill for repair. A manual gear box is virtually bullet proof, with only a wear item like a clutch needing eventual replacement, at a far far lower cost.

Shifting fast has nothing to do with why I like to row my own gears.

Thread went OT. Haven't followed the stock market very closely and I do have fun with my $300 dropped into the Cryptocurrency market (rather, casino). I do have some savings laying around but have hesitated to put them anywhere yet, as I'll need them liquid next year.
Yes it is. A beast really. I was going to get a Focus RS (350 hp) but the fuel mileage simply doesnt work for me with my daily 120 mile commute.
60 mi/100km each way? Did it for a gig in my job during a couple weeks or so. I think my part of Europe is much less used to commuting more than 50km/35 miles. It's fun to work in a kind of "wouldn't live here" place and come back home with warm weather and head for the beach. I've always commuted since entered College and got lots of "are you from that far" comments all the time. It even seems utopian working just 10mi from home.

A very irrational fantasy of mine would be a Dodge Challenger (392 Hemi is fine). Classic, american, an Statement. Backed by a nice investment portfolio and fat account, without including fuel and maintenance nightmares. You ain't seeing them in Europe much. Of course...
In reality the family diesel VW is great for the limited driving I do. Honestly I'm intrigued by the electric Teslas and advancements such as autopilot.
ATM, our generation (born late 80s-90s) will enjoy a situation akin of Kodak, keep pushing and going without much glamour.

62 miles each way to be exact. Given good weather it's less than an hours drive, which is pretty normal for me as I used to live in a big city and going anywhere took an hour. Now my hour drive is the same length, but more miles driven.

Just like I did. Though the last day I had to (Firday) caught some massive traffic. An accident that had me stuck an hour or so and then some congestion so I took a detour down the coast. 1:15h became 2:45. And on that day grabbed my uncle's old Ford so didn't have music to lighten up, but at least listened some podcasts.
Living close to work is a double edged sword, depends on the industry you work in. I am completely detached because of distance but I would if it were close. Perhaps I'd dislike running into some customers and such. OTOH not much time spent commuting, which adds up on your free time. THe distance/time ratio in cities is much worse. I live 1h15 from the largest city and living on it just may drop it down to 45min.

Which S4? B7? If its' the B8 that is supercharged, not turbocharged.

It's a B9, 2018. The last one I had was perfect in every way except for gas milage due to the S/C. It was hard to not go for an RS-3 for sheer value but I'm not a fan of it's shorter wheelbase for long trips. Repairs can be expensive but you pay to play and as long as you can pay, why not? Next ride will be what I hope is Audi's version of a Tesla. My commute has been 0 miles since 1998, wife's is also zero. But then I take the S/C'd truck carrying a lightweight camper on the road to create new work or the Audi to see family in another state like this week and that gets the miles racking up.

Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life. Succeed at it and you can play with whatever toys you feel like.

Ah, B9, makes sense. Personally I prefer the B8, since you could get them with the 6MT trans. (no such luck for the B9). But the B9 (at least in the USA) doesn't have a DSG, it's got a torque-converter 8-sp traditional auto trans (an even bigger step down from DSG and 6MT): https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2018-audi-s4-first-drive-review

I doubt the turbo will get much better mileage than the SC but maybe. RS3 would be nice too, but still no more 6MT unfortunately (though it does at least get a DSG).

I use the RobinHood app. 100% no fee trades, 100% of the time.

But that app does not use a manual transmission. It does not use an automatic transmission.

We were vacationing in Michigan’s U.P. in early September where I ran into a Ford engineer recruiting new engineers at Michigan Tech University in Houghton. He drove up from Dearborn in a Focus RS. Beautiful car, and the AWD would perfect for where we live (Lake Michigan snowbelt), but we just can't justify the car's high cost. Pity too, we both really liked it.

196 miles round trip daily. 2017 Subaru WRX 6MT FA20DIT. 30-32 MPG consistently. Unfortunately only 268 HP........... :cool: what a jewel.

I've been looking for a excuse to buy a car. You guys are giving me turbo envy

To get my Focus ST I traded in my Fiesta ST. BIG mistake! My son outgrew the Fiesta so I had to get something bigger, but I probably should have gotten a second car and kept the Fiesta ST. That car was a ROCKET! and better yet, the handling was simply amazing. It took me a full year to develop the skills to out drive the tires on that car. Before I traded it in I could take exit ramps from the highway (that were clover shaped, nice long turns) at nearly 65 mph (speed rated at 25 mph). Incredible handling and with the super light weight of the car, 200 hp made the thing fly. It had a silky smooth 6 speed manual gear box. It is profoundly amazing that in the 2 years I had the car (and 80,000 miles on the odometer) that I only got one ticket with it.

Plus, if you kept the car under 80 mph (hard to do!) it got 40 miles per gallon!

I could afford the 40k for the Focus RS, just not the crazy amount of gas it would take to drive it 120 miles a day. That all wheel drive was sooooo desirable for me. I dont know how Ford managed to make a 4 cylinder engine with the fuel economy of a V-8, but they did it!

Yes, we were talking about Kodak stock tanking to $5.45. Boy I bet the CEO would love to get back to anything north of 5 bucks. Very hard to predict. I suspect that the CEO and the board are a bunch of idiots. Taking it private and breaking it up might work. Somehow the film side needs to be fused into Alaris/Carestream/Ilford ??? A real Anglo-American company with marketing geniuses could make a killing with brands and do-dads. Maybe roll out a kit with a Paterson tank, a thermometer and Hobbi-paks ? There's millions of teenagers to exploit with the latest gimmick.
