I received an e-mail this morning from thedarkroom.com stating that they can no longer mount 35mm slides due to a shortage of mounts. They hope to restart mounting when mounts are available. I am hoping this is just a case of poor planning or back luck, but if this is an industry-wide problem, this will make E-6 much less attractive to me and others and may hurt E-6 sales.
I am knowing such problem in concern of 6x6 mounts. But there it is going about the general (long term) avaibility. The avaibility of 35mm slide mounts in general no problem at all. From different manufacturers. But this special 35 mounts for automatic mounting are not avaible on the long term.
So you are right Kodak would support their own marketing much if they would Start a production line with some 35mm mounts. But the problen is in details. The machines you have a need of are no modern ones. The labs wich are responcible for are horrified from costs of reinvestigation.
But if you are looking at Kodak today they would be not amused about costs in regard of lab support with New mounting machines.
The special mounts will come to an define end next. I can't say if they are still in production. There is a special variant of Agfa CS mounts wich are concepted for automatic mounting. These mounts may be avaible. All other systems seamed to be discontinued long time ago.
It isn't a Problem to produce that plastic mounts. There are many companies you may call imediately and they will make you an offer such like this : 4100,- USD per 500.000 mounts, 24.000,- USD per 5million mounts, around 40.000,- USD per 10 million mounts.
In addition you have to pay a ground flad of 78.000,- USD per single production run.
That will make a pricing to USD 0,165 each or USD 33,- a 200 pack of mounts maximum.
Or USD 0,0118 each or USD 2,36 a 200 pack of mounts minimum.
But if you will order just 50 packs of 200 mounts you'll have to pay 78.000,- + 4100 (the min.)
what cost you then USD 8,21 each mount and USD 1642,- each 200pack and that would make USD 82.100,- in total.
with regards
PS : Today the problem is on cost and efficiency of mounting. Next is the problem of Investments in New machines. At last the long term avaibility of special mounts is also a problem.
