I hate these threads...

Yes. Most threads here are slums, with the same ten people broadcasting their negativity and pointless grudges, and dozens of others reacting in kind. I regret almost every time I check in to Photrio, and nearly every time I post too, including this one. It's a waste of breath.

It's heartening and incredible to me that Ilford, Kodak, Fuji, the mavericks at Ferrania and Polaroid et al are giving it a go in this challenging environment, and I support them all in one way or another. Why any of them would participate here is beyond me. Anyone with an iota of marketing experience would know it's a black hole of negativity that will never pay off.

Simon Galley showed that your observations are mostly fantasy.

How appropriate that you should reply. Any company can spend their time here, including Ilford, but most choose not to as far as I can tell. Wonder why?

I looked up Simon, who I remember fondly. His profile says "Simon R Galley was last seen: Sep 9, 2015". Change of jobs I assume, and I also assume there is a new marketing lead from Ilford dedicated to the crucial Photrio market.

Simon Galley built up a ton of good will by his postings here at APUG. That you ignore this does not change this fact.

I shoot film because it gives me a positive buoyant feeling. I love the stuff and love shooting it. So we got a few negative Nancys here with an ax to grind. No big deal, adds some flavor to the pot.

I don't have a major stake in this anyhow. I enjoy shooting cameras no matter what the format. Happens to be film scratches an itch that other formats don't. It would be a shame if it's gone but I wouldn't leave photography behind if it did.

Film Schools I can see

Hollywood movies where they are showing the characters watching - err Home Movies, yes.

SkateBoard and Snow Board Videos - Heck Yes. (it was a cult thing until e100 went away.)

VERY low budget pictures using Super 16. Maybe. More latitude with Vision 50D. Super 8 would be really pushing it. ("The Hurt Locker" is about the only successful movie shot on Super16)

All Undeserved Niche markets.

Film of any variety isn't a low budget option anymore, it''s a creative choice for those with a budget.
Digital doesn't have the film/dev/scan costs, and you can shoot 4K on your phone. That's the low budget option.

My iPhone X cost $1200. My Nikon FM2n cost $200. Which is lower cost?

We're talking movie film here right ?
Anyway, of course, the answer is the iPhone. Most (all ?) film students will already have a phone that's capable of recording of at least HD. Buying a Super 8 camera (+film, +dev, +scan) is extra expense.

The fact is that all those crazy skate and snow videos which were originated on super 8 disappeared when Ektachrome went. How many rolls Kodak will sell to the people who want to do similar projects is unknown. They'll sell a few to me but I mostly still make home movies. Hollywood and TV does use super 8 for a few "atmospheric" scenes. Also music videos....remember the big Led Zeppelin concert video it has loads of brief super 8 shots.

There is some kind of a market, and over on the (movie) film shooting forums there's been talk for years about the need for a new camera which will be reliable for professionals and have some spare parts/repair availability.

Well argued. Very rigorous.

Yeah but the kids already have an iPhone or Android phone....it's a necessity for modern life. And they're not paying $1200 up front for it but they're buying it included in their monthly phone contract. They don't actually *need* a still camera or dedicated film or video camera unless they take up the hobby.

Ok, iPhone X (shoots 5K) $1200, new Kodak Super 8mm camera $2700. Which costs less?

I'm not sure I can answer that question as the Kodak Super 8 camera is vapourware

As has been previously said, the phone doesn't really have a cost for the film student. They've bought one already so using it to shoot movies is essentially free.

Then please explain exactly why you are still here.

These forums *are* a cesspit of negativity....just look at the messages directed at Film Ferrania....the wilful refusal to read their updates followed by entitled whining about their E6 film not being yet available and accusations of fraud, lies and even theft.

But these pages are also a great source of information. I just tend to ignore a few specific posters now.

It's a similar story in the cassette tape world....a company in Missouri is working to manufacture the first new American cassette tape in 30 years and has had some delays....and people whine about the project being a failure, a lie, a fraud....and they never even tried a Kickstarter and haven't taken a penny of people's money.

Sometimes I really wonder if I am part of the human race or if I'm a space alien who happened to land here and has forgotten his origins.

Cassettes? We knew they sounded terrible when we were making copies of our (friends) LPs so we could take our music with us. Nostalgic nonsense.

the dr quin medicin woman series was shot on 16mm, not a film though, just hundreds of hours of film...

why does everything have to be high fidelity to enjoy it ?
i had about 30 cassettes in my car when it burned up
( it was a vw bug btw, not a high liner )
and i still miss listening to the music on them
i had a bootleg cassette of a new order concert from like
just after the band carried on after ian curtis died
and an ex gf grabbed it when we broke up, dang, i miss listening to that too, it was a great concert.

i shoot 35mm , which isn't as hifi as the 11x14 or 4x5 i use, but its still fun,
not to mention i have 2 rolls of 110 film to process ...

im sure it is a personal preference like everything, why people like hifi and no lo fi..
but not everyone embraces the fact that it ( cassette tapes ) were garbage in garbage out
