Kodak films direct from Eastman Kodak (was: Kodacolor 100. New)

Portra and TMAX are "dead".

Eastman Kodak, like with the previous lines, has "taken them back"(?) from Alaris and renamed them Ektacolor Pro (160, 400, 800) and Ektapan (100, 400, P3200).

I assume this has something to do with brand name ownership and/or brand name usage restrictions of the TMAX and Portra brands.

You are correct. a quick look at a few (Alaris) datasheets indicates that Alaris owns the trademark/brand name of Portra and TMAX. They were (are?) licensing all the other names (Gold, Max, Ektachrome, Tri-X, etc) from Eastman.

Ah, that makes sense. Perhaps @MattKing knows this, but it looks like some (all?) of the names of then-current still film products were transferred to Alaris along with the distribution management activities during the split. I suppose Eastman now can't be bothered to try and negotiate Alaris out of those names, although they must have tried. Possibly the price was just too steep.

I like the new names. (y)

I just bought some fresh Kodak Ektar 100 color negative film in 120 propack from B&H. It has a weird maroon color that I have never seen. The package still says "Kodak Alaris" in the back and expiration date is 2027.11. So it seems not everything is back to Eastman Kodak?

Let s have a look how the situation will be in Europe. I have noticed that some of the big stores have run out of Ektachrome, and are telling their customers the film will be available only in late May. So far. I have only seen Kodacolor with prices exceeding the prices of similar Alaris stuff in EU.

It doesn't have to be K-14. It's arguably Kodaks most well known name. Might as well strike while the metal is hot. I've been pushing this for a while. Imagine the noise if Kodak says Kodachrome is back and easier then ever!

Look, the people who actually shot the stuff know better but aren't the market now. Yes, we know it's not the original K-14 process but if Kodak can get the look in E-6 they won't be able to keep it on the shelves.

If they re-badge Ektachrome then hopefully they would also reformulate closer to the Kodachrome color palette rather than the horrible blue cast over the current iteration of E100.

This is nonsense. Current Ektachrome is magnificent, if you want it warmer add a filter. This is film not digital!
🤬😭😂🥲☺️😊
Sorry, just got a little excited 😊

Didn’t need to add any filter to the old Ektachrome. It was nice and neutral. Why should I have to mess about with filters to get a neutral color palette?

Yes, the Alaris-distributed films had their packaging redesigned to this motif fairly recently, but before the Eastman-distributed films started coming out. That said, I don't think there has been any official announcement that Alaris is ceasing distribution of still films, just that Eastman is now distributing them directly as well. People (myself included) are assuming Alaris has stopped/will stop distribution, but that hasn't been confirmed. For one thing, I don't think Eastman has announced distribution of any sheet films yet.

Of course it's nonsense! Nonsense sells! This is about keeping a company afloat. You do stupid stuff that makes money.

That is effective as of 2025.
The 2016 dated Datasheets - the last iteration before 2025, as far as I can tell - had Portra and TMAx as trademarks used under license from Eastman Kodak.
So Kodak Alaris must have bought the trademarks, or taken them as consideration for re-negotiation of the distribution deal.
I wonder how much of value was exchanged to change the agreement and leave the world with two different top level film distributors of Kodak manufactured still film?
I wonder who gets what markets?

Of course this version of Ektapan will be nothing like the Ektapan sheet film I used to shoot 30+ years ago, but sure...

I thought Ektapan sounded familiar, so I checked my Kodak Master Darkroom Dataguide (circa 1970) and sure enough found Ektapan 4162, available in sheets, 70mm rolls and 3.5" rolls.

So the sheet films are still distributed by Alaris and remain TMax, Portra and Tri-X (320) in name?
