So today I got a friendly call from my chemistry supplier. He told me I need to make a last order for Kodak E6 chemicals because they were going to be discontinued at the end of the month. I guess this was going to happen, just a matter of time. I really liked Kodaks chems, they work great in my JOBO. Has anyone else heard of this? I have never used Fuji, in fact I'm not even sure where to get them in the states. I was just wondering what the options are now. I was just getting into shooting slides when I found out Ilfochrome was killed. Sad, but I supposed the writing is on the wall.

Just bought a 617 back and 23 rolls of velvia for about $650 all up.
Say it ain't so?

(at least, I've got the Jobo now and there'll probably always be Tetenal, hopefully they'll be all the stronger with the less competition...)

Kodak is no longer in the photography business. They sold that business and got out. They're now in the commercial packaging printing business. Completely different. Not related to consumers at all.

Kodak was still making E6 chemistry? Thought they would have killed that with all the films.

Please allow me to get this straight--Eastman Kodak is a print shop? Man, that's rough. Those poor slobs.

I would have thought that they sold the chemistry to Alaris along with the films?

But fair enough if neither of them are making E6 films, neither would have much use for E6 chems...

Eastman (and the other) Kodaks stopped manufacturing all their chemistry some time ago. They were still marketing it though. Kodak Alaris received those marketing rights as part of the bankruptcy settlement. Like Eastman Kodak, Kodak Alaris sells through distributors. So any discontinuation could be just a decision of one of those distributors.
Isn't this one of those rumour threads that brlong in the Soapbox, unless and until there is some more reliable confirmation?

Well said there, Matt. The OP should include a link to an official announcement from Kodak, rather as Fuji does in the form of a Dealer Bulletin. So where is the statement? If no verifiable confirmation, it is rumour and heresy.

It's in their best interest to cancel E6, as since in the USA (possible all of north/South America? there is no importing of the Fuji chems for home kits?

So by killing E6... They also hope to increase the switch from Fuji chromes to Ektar and Portra films just by the sake of having no way to process them...

What this means to certified kodak labs like Praus who have excellent E6, are they allowed to use Fuji E6 chems while also running C-41 kodak chems?

And what about CatLabs new E6 home kit? Do they rely on kodak chems at all?

This sucks.... I'm now officially pissed at Kodak and grumpy with the rest of the grey beards on this site... It's a smart move for them financially as I said but it also may potentially alienate a lot of people who won't be able to get their film processed easily....

I wonder if their RA4 developer will be next? It is currently made for them in China so possibly not but if it goes - then so goes my preferred RA4 chemicals.

Mine too. The concentrates last about three years before turning black (however see (there was a url link here which no longer exists)) but if you mix them up they may very well last longer. APUG member hrst has done some tests on this. My experience is that 2 1/2 year old mixed up RA4 dev produced prints indistinguishable from fresh dev (to this amateur's eye). Mix the lot up and place it in 1 litre pop bottles with the air squeezed out. It's not a long term solution but it may give you a 2-3 year buffer.

Support Tetenal and other independent suppliers of E6 and C41, and other chemicals.

Support Ilford, Fuji and the independents (including Ferrania if it gets off the ground) for film.

Forget Kodak. I've even stopped buying their cheap-and-nasty "Made in China" batteries. (And that's not saying that all batteries "Made in China" are rubbish, just that Kodak are prostituting their previous good name for a quick buck on products with zero quality control.)

yeah why IS that. I've always thought that working solutions would go belly up first, but I have a year old RA4 dev solution that actually works just fine where the concentrates I mixed it from have long since given up the ghost. Black part B, mixed up another litre, wouldn't put a dent on a test strip.

Anyhow, back on topic (sorta), why aren't the fuji hunt C-41 and E6 kits available in the US ? They're top-notch.

They make a lot of RA4 paper, so why would they discontinue them, it wouldn't make sense.

If you remember (there was a url link here which no longer exists), you will remember that Tetenal now makes Kodak's chemistry, or at least a major part of it. Since, unlike B&W chemistry, color chemistry is (supposed to be) interchangeable, I would guess that the Kodak E6 kit is on its way out sooner or later.

Fuji seems to think it's bad business to make American customers happy...

Taking away Velvia50 and home kits... It's very frustrating...
