Hi to everyone,

I have been skirting the edges of APUG for well over a year now and find myself watching the threads on a regular basis. I thought it was time I properly introduced myself…

Just a few weeks ago I moved from Auckland to the shores of Lake Taupo here in New Zealand. I now have the time and the space to set up my darkroom and actively pursue this consuming passion.

My emerging fascination with film has come about over the past two years or so. I suffered a brain injury as a side effect of major heart surgery and just cannot remember how to operate all the buttons and dial on those lovely but complicated digital toys. Photography has played a big part in my rehabilitation. By going forward to completely manual cameras I hope, again, to have my attention more on the composition than on which knob to turn or button to push.

I have a couple of nice old 35mm cameras although my main interest is in MF and 4x5. To be honest, I have not yet taken a lot of photo’s with the gear I have - yet.
I started out much more a collector than a photographer however that brief interlude has helped me appreciate the technicalities of the equipment without having to deal with the pressure of the moment. More recently I have been shedding gear so that the stuff I have is the stuff I will use.

So far, it has taken about 2 ½ years to get myself to a clear headspace where I can begin to work on my picture taking. I am a bit slow at thinking things through, so more contemplative styles of photography are likely to suit me best. For now, I imagine my subject matter will likely be found in and around the lake, and within the Tongariro National Park. Later in the year I plan a trip to Australia where my brother runs an outback safari tour business from Alice Springs. We intend taking off in one of his trucks and going bush for a while purely to take photographs.

Although I consider myself a novice at this point, I grew up amongst keen photographers so cameras and darkrooms were common in our extended family. My father was a keen photographer who taught at a local polytechnic. I am hoping that, with the help of the APUG community, I will pick it up again quite quickly.

Right now, I am sifting through boxes of accumulated paper, chemicals, and equipment and planning the layout for my darkroom. It will be a 'budget build' based on many of the great ideas I have found on this site. I will keep you all posted as I proceed ....

Thank you, for the wonderful insights I have already made by reading the threads to which you all so generously contribute.
Thank you in advance for the wonderful support I know I will receive.

Cheers
Alistair

Welcome from the windy city.

You've got plenty of great landscapes to contemplate there. Maybe Ngauruhoe could spark itself up for you?

G'day from the mighty Waikato!

If you're ever up this way or if I'm down your way we should go shoot some stuff!

Hi-de-ho good neighbor! Welcome to the fold. You have chosen the best possible route to recovery known to mankind. Enjoy yourself, and take all the time in the world to be healed.

Welcome to APUG from the lower counties of William Penn's colony.

Alistair - hello and welcome to APUG from western Massachusetts USA.

Welcome, Alistair. I hear that New Zealand is beautiful.

Welcome. I visited Lake Taupo two years ago. When are you going to visit Iowa?

Kia ora Alistair, from Hawkes Bay. Will catch up with you some time in the not too distant future.
What a great intro.
regards
Craig

G'day Alistair
Welcome to APUG. A bit of fly fishing on the Tongariro would probably also aid your recovery!

Kia Ora Alistair.
Along with Wanaka, Queenstown and Christchurch, Lake Taupo is one of my favourite scenic destinations.

Welcome to APUG Alistair! I look forward to seeing your prints in the gallery in the future, once you are all set up.

G'day Alistair, and welcome to APUG from across the Tasman. You have certainly chosen the right place to pursue your photographic passion. We spent three glorious days in Taupo two years ago on a three week tour of NZ and I have to say it's one of my favourite towns. We will be back in NZ again in July, but this time only in the deep south. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, and I look forward to seeing more from you in the future.
Cheers, Peter.

Welcome Alistair, Kia- ora in the U.K is a brand of cheap orange cordial that sticks to your teeth. :D, I didn't know it was from New Zealand.

Although Kia Ora is a Maori language greeting, Kia-ora cordials actually originated in Sydney and are still sold in Australia. If you google kia ora you will find that it is commonly used throughout Australasia for many different purposes and object/place names.

Sticks to your teeth [tried twice to put confused smilie in here - won't work????] I've never heard that one before.

That's the effect it has on mine, and in fact when I first heard as a teenager that communist forces had crossed the 38th parallel on the radio in 1950 I had never heard of Korea, (geography was never my best subject) and I wondered where Kia ora was :D

Tena koe e hoa.

That gets the kia ora out of the way, just as Telecom NZ tried to do a few years ago, forbidding their operators to greet callers with "Kia ora"

Regards - Ross

Welcome Alistair!

I spent New Years camping in the Park way back in 1986/7 and had the pleasure of walking around Tongariro for several days with my 4x5 (resting my knee from bicycling). Scrambled up the side of Ngauruhoe and part way up Ruapehu. Beautiful!

Before arriving there I spent several days tramping around Lake Waikaremoana. You got some great countryside!
