Kentmere 100 & 400 in 120 format

Many cameras from the 70s still work fine, if you want to keep them alive get a CLA (even though buying another used one is currently often still cheaper).

The replacement one you'll buy in lieu of servicing the one you already have will often need a CLA too, so it can be a zero sum game.

Well...there must be several million functional medium format cameras out there. I own at least 20 myself. And given that most of mine are rather vintage, Kentmere may well end up replacing Fomapan as my film of choice except when I'm photographing gigs, light shows and fireworks.

But it's not just me. There is clearly a demand for a cheaper option in medium format B&W film. Many shops simply don't stock Foma and in the UK at least have concentrated on HP5 and FP4 in 120. Now I bet they'll stock Ketnmere too. The days of £2 rolls of 120 film are over, but there *is* now another relatively cheap option.

This agree with my experience. With everything else being the same (developer, camera, lens, light conditions) Kentmere was more contrasty (Kentmere 400 vs HP5+ and Kentmere 100 vs FP4+). Also, HP5+ gave better push results vs Kentmere 400. Never pushed Kentmere 100 so not sure on that.

I will still get a couple of Fomapan since I like it but not as much as I expected.

One factor: the price of film in 2022, and Ilford's projected costs going forward. They NEED to have a less expensive option in 120.

I would be interested in their making 70mm 100' bulk rolls, as I and other shooters with 70mm backs would like another choice, with HP5 PLUS costing about $250 U.S for just 50', these days.

Really happy about this announcement. I'll be ordering a brick of each for my senior photo students. I stopped teaching them about medium format photography due to cost, but Kentmere is affordable.

I do have a 220 holder for my RB, so I might try it... But for my students? I would have to prep all that film for them... I already do that with 35.. and that is a LOT of work!

Correct:
As market research about the camera market (new and used) is part of my job, I can ensure you there are millions of functional medium format cameras out there.
Too much of them are still sitting unused in cupboards. We don't have a medium format camera shortage that would limit demand for 120 film significantly.

I think this is wonderful news, the most interesting part of their media release for me, was this single sentence:

"In our recent Global Film Users Survey, 75% of the the 8600+ respondents used 120 format so there are a lot of medium format photographers out there."
