Actually, I don't really know.
I feel maybe it's a developer somewhat similar to D76.
Why am I using it?
The only reason I use it, is that it is very economical and saves money.
As it consists of the ordinary elements that are easily available and characterized by their very acceptable prices, which are metol + hydroquinone, but it is concentrated and the shelf life is long without its oxidation.

I've used both (not exactly Metolal but Jerry's Caustic-Metol) and there's not much to complain about either.

Here's one example of Kalogen: https://www.flickr.com/photos/79033393@N04/33352482638/in/

And one of Caustic-Metol: https://www.flickr.com/photos/79033393@N04/47554211011/in/

As you have all the required ingredients, just make 50ml of each and do some testing.

I have never used Jerry's Caustic-Metol and was wondering if it has near the shelf life of Kalogen. What's the formula for Jerry's recipe? JohnW

Kalogen being less grainy? Less than rodinal? Thanks!!!
I found Kalogen less grainy than Rodinal at 1+25 or 1+50. That's just my take on Rodinal vs Kalogen. I find Rodinal 1+100 semi-stand to be very nice grain wise, but streaking can be a problem so I gave up on it. JohnW

Kalogen is less grainy if pH of the working solution is reduced a bit using Sodium metabisulphite. Development time needs to be appropriately increased. I used reduced pH Kalogen to even get pictorial results from Micrat Orto which is a very high contrast docu film. YMMV.
