By why does this happen? I made a print of this image a few weeks ago and it turned out fine. I reprinted the same neg the other day and the solarization appered. I repeted this again today and got a similar solarization result. Could low humidity cause this?

I'm not sure. Do you air dry or blow dry after sensitizing?

David-Why does this solarization only happenen on a few prints?
The humidity level is very low here in Ohio right now. Could that cause it? It seems strange to have this happen on just certain prints.

It the issue consistent with a particular negative with each print and at a consistent time of exposure? If it's isn't consistent, then perhaps its the amount of sensitizer on that particular part of the paper? Your negative highlight values may be too dense and take long to print through thereby causing too overexposure in the shadows.
I've often thought that it's also related to using too much sensitizer as well? Not sure, but just a hunch.
However, using gold, platinum or palladium toner will instantly make those areas disappear!

I'm pretty sure that the solarization has nothing to do with low humidity though.

Hi Andrew,

please excuse me, I was away from pug for a few days. I used Bergger Cot-320 paper. I used a Philips tanning device and used a 8 minute exposure. Since I do not have any comparison yet I can not say if it was a good or bad candidate. I will do more printing this weekend, trying different negatives and toners. Eventually I would love to use my pinhole negs, but I am not sure yet if I will be able to get enough contrast out of them.
Thanks of all the help and encouragement!

I asked some questions about it in the Standard Gallery… I'll ask them here, too. Which developer and paper did you use? How did you find printing with TMX? I was under the impression that it was not a good candidate for alt printing due to its UV blocking layer… or maybe you just have to extend the printing time? Very nice first print, by the way.

Thanks Andrew. I definitely had fun printing today. I am still a very bad judge of what negative will make a good print. So much to learn, but so much fun!

rince, if the prints look good to you, then that is all that matters! Would love to hear how your weekend of printing goes!

Andrew- I have been air drying after applying the sensitizer but will start using a hair dryer at cool setting to see if that might help.

Davido - I have been very consistent with the coating process. I only see the problem after the print is dry. Cant see it during the processing.

I have purchased a small humidifier and will start using it to increase the humidity level in my darkroom. Its winter in Ohio and humidity is very low around 30%.
