We need an anti-thread in which we discuss how HB has sold their corporate soul to the devil as evidenced by their failure to keep making V bodies (who wouldn't want a 520C//M??) and CFx lenses. Also ... they are evil for bowing to the gods of pixeltwiddling. Who's game?

There’s nothing to plus. Apparently an insincere comment that was allegedly “humor”. [edit, for Hassasin’s benefit: referring to the suggestion of a new thread]. Sigh; deep sigh…

Interesting diversion

Start one… it’s a valid opinion and should be a very interesting discussion. But please make it about abandoning a longtime product line rather than AvD. That would simply be trolling.

I am too simple to understand all that, or interpret the way I see it, while at it. Let's focus on something else. I retain the right to + anything I choose.

Go right ahead. Plus whatever you want.

If you want clarification on my post, just ask. I’m more than happy to oblige. I’ll even write it in braille or Morse code or whatever helps you understand. Or, feel free to ignore me or simply not respond… I won’t be offended. Really

Moderator hat on.
We highly recommend not using threads to post about what or how others post. Please keep to the subject of the thread, or reasonably connected diversions - not comments about posting choices.
Hat now removed.

I like chocolate cake. It's my favorite.

But I'm fine with others talking about their love for angel food cake or red velvet or some other form of cake.

I'm fine with it as long as its about cake. Because all cake is good.

Cake.

Santa Test 1 by Nokton48, on Flickr

I'm shooting a Santa Event Saturday with my Hasselblad CFV16 on my 500C/M. Met the Group and took this test photo, focusing on the background. Taking extra batteries, cards, and a backup digital camera. So this is it. I'm doing this as a means for them to promote their event. Should be thirty to sixty kids. That's a lot!

This is the 50mm Distagon, lighting on Stroboframe Vivitar 283. I used Manual on the flash and shot at F6.3 and also F4.5, back ISO was EI200. High ceiling in here, extra Duracell Max batteries on hand, to speed recycling. A 32 gig card holds 335 images, one card should be plenty. At the end of the event, I hand off the card, and photos are emailed to each family. Planning to do two shots of each, no more than three.

That tree looks rather evil.

@Nokton48 , may I ask why use the strobe on manual? Up until very recently I used a 285 on stroboframe and found the A modes to be accurate and easier on battery life.

Sounds like a fun event!

Hi Brian,

I forgot to set it to Auto. LOL I'll have plenty of light on the red (my usual) setting on the 283. The CFV handles over exposure pretty well.

focusing on the background

Not to be a miser, but I'm pretty sure the actual plane of focus of that shot is a few feet in front of that background, on an area that's not in the image. Note how the ceiling plates and the candy cane on the left are inching towards the plane of focus - but never quite making it.

Good Points. Better use a magnifying finder and switch to a screen with focus aids. After switching back to the CFV16 Focusing Screen, and retesting/examining image on laptop, the back is sharp. The 50mm F4 was always a bear to focus with the standard crosshair screen. So now I'm back to this new CFV16 one and all good.

If it really bothers you, I guess there are a few things you could do:
  • Systematically click each thread about Hasselblad and click the 'ignore thread' at the top. This way, you only get to see it once and then it'll be gone (for you) forever.
  • Post threads about other brands/topics so Hasselblad becomes less prevalent relatively speaking.
  • Only visit the Medium Format subforum when you're in a good mood and feeling resilient enough for content you don't like.
  • Develop a preference for Hasselblad cameras and join in.
  • Somehow acquire the art of not giving a f....(I didn't say that.)
That last piece of advice is actually very good and applies to many other aspects of life.

There is even a book about it, which I really recommend (as well as the other by the same author):

As far as I can remember, the book does not mention Hasselblads - OP you should be safe if you decide to read it :D

I used Mamiya 6x4.5's for years, great cameras. As time went on I acquired more medium format cameras including Hasselblad. If I see a posting about a camera I'm familiar with I post. This is a medium format column, any manufacture, model welcomed.

A new generation of Hasselblad users 🤪 There was a time I have seen much more in Reddit.
Seriously, have they read the manuals, reviews, posts or else before they buy the Hasselblad?

For serious work, I like my Mamiya, Rollei. Bronica is also fine .
For "just a fun and go out" type, my trouble-awesome Kiev 80/88 is nice . People keep mistakenly-seeing it was a Hasselblad. Right now I am starting a Pentacon Six set collection, took it out and I have been asked whether it was a Pentax 67.🤣

I just finished a monster job of developing a bunch of Fujifilm 400h Pro and HP5+ rolls and scanning them. They were shot on two cameras. First was the Hasselblad 503cx with the 80mm lens, which was my latest addition to my Hasselblad lens collection. The second camera was the Rolleiflex 2.8F with Xenotar 80mm lens.

And once again I was reminded that Hasselblad lenses only shine on a tripod. Despite shooting within the 1/125 to 1/500s range on both cameras, the Rolleiflex delivered a much higher rate of completely shake-free razor-sharp images. Nearly 100% actually. The Hasselblad requires much higher level of concentration to achieve comparable results handheld. The difference is small, but it's there when you're 100% zoomed in onto 8x8K scans.

And yet, I had twice as much fun shooting with a Hassy. It is just so engaging. Every time I press the shutter button this happens. This unintended comparison once again reminded me why the 60mm lens is a far better "kit lens" for the Hasselblad, because it brings it nearly to parity with 80mm Rolleiflexes for handheld shooting. The 50mm is also superb.

It is my understanding that the Hasselblad was designed for hand held shooting. From my own experience, I haven’t noticed any difference in sharpness between pictures taken with Hassy and Rollei F cameras. Any differences would depend upon individual photographer. Of course, this is often not the case with longer lenses on Hasselblad, when a tripod is more than helpful.
The simple truth is that among MF SLRs, Hasselblad has the best ergonomic design and is most reliable (if my earlier 1000F is disregarded).

@guangong Can't argue with physics. As you press the shutter button, the mirror begins its movement sending an impulse onto the camera body. Simultaneously, the "barn doors" begin their movement doing the same. None of those forces are present in a TLR. I would even argue that the presence of the barn doors makes a Hassy the least stable MF SLR. I do not understand why they're even needed. My Bronica manages without.

Of course, photographer's skills matter. But all else being equal a medium format SLR cannot compete with a rangefinder or a TLR at handholdability. Because physics. Basically, if you're saying that your hands are better than mine, congratulations! But as you keep lowering the shutter speed, eventually you'll get to a point where you'll see the same difference I see at 1/125s.

I am posting this here to play devil's advocate. I am convinced that the Hasselblad is the ultimate camera, nothing compares. But even this magnificent machine has its flaws and handholdability is the one I bump into the most.

P.S. Although... a part of me wants to challenge you. Try competing with a tripod? Shoot a scene with a 80mm lens at 1/125s handheld. 11 shots in a row. Then shoot the final exposure of the same scene on a tripod with a mirror lockup. And then tell me again that all 12 exposures look the same scanned at 4,000dpi?

I guess it depends on the person. I had a hasselblad and thought it was an ergonomic disaster compared to a Pentax 67.

You’re most likely correct. I picked up a Pentax 67 during the first week that they were on the market at Willoughbys on 48th st store. Walked around the block trying one out (camera stores once upon a time would let you do that) and just found it unwieldy.
