True, wanted some nice photos so took my best camera at the time! That was its last trip though unfortunately as I switched systems. They aren't worth much these days either so it sits at home...

I can certainly respect the effort involved though, sometimes we need to suffer for our art, right? Well done.

Shooting Hasselblads for 22 years in the city and everywhere - haven't been asked once.

Maybe they think it's a Brownie?

Once when I was shooting a flower with my Pentax 645n, using tripod, 120mm macro lens, right angle finder, focus rail - the whole nine yards - my neighbor called out "Mighty fancy camera, George. Is that a Nikon?" I explained that it was a Pentax, and used film like the old Kodak brownies used to. I don't think she knew what to say.

Guess my neighborhood isn't classy enough for the Hasselblad question. And so it goes.

Never had the coveted ITAH question asked but once when I had my Hasselblad on a tripod aimed at an old, interesting brick wall, a man walked up and asked if he could through my camera. I said "certainly" and let him look through the old "stove-pipe" magnifier at the ground glass which he did for quite some time. Finally he straightened up, turned to me and said:"for the life of me I didn't see anything interesting enough to take a picture of, sorry." As it turned out he was, of course, correct. But he did try to see something there that I was seeing but couldn't so I never really felt put-down by his critrique...............Regards!

I was at the bank today and the guy at the next window said "that's a Leica". It was, and we had a great conversation for about twenty minutes. Former NYT photog.

Nice camera but still not a Hasselblad.

I took my new-to-me Nikon S2 rangefinder with the iconic 50mm f1.4 to the High Museum here in Atlanta for the Walker Evans exhibit. Seemed appropriate. One person asked if it were a mirror-less camera; I answered yes, but... he'd already toddled off. Another visitor said "Cool camera!" Good taste! The museum guard recognized the Nikon and was really knowledgeable about Evans and photography in general. He felt, as did I, that the exhibit lighting was too dim, although according to him it was at "museum certified levels." I used my Gossen meter to check the levels in the Evans area with another photo area, and there was an about TWO STOP difference! Now, I've hung my silver gelatin prints in bright interior light for years with no deterioration. The Evans prints were silver, save for some incredible Polaroid prints. What gives??

Hm.....

Well, as others have mentioned, I think it all boils down to a few things:
- People know the icons (usually), at least the names.
- They see some weirdo from APUG shooting a weirdo camera and think it's interesting.
- "What do i say now?" they think and just like awkward pickup-lines at the bar ("are you here alone"), the ITAH seems to be quite common as an opening-line. ^^

Just be positive that people are showing some interest and explain (often for the 100th time) that film is till available etc and so on.
They are just fascinated, some of our cameras sure stand out from the modern black DSLR's and P&S cameras.

A guy on the subway gawked for 10 minutes on my Rolleiflex 2.8F before awkwardly asking if he could snap a picture of it with his phone, I had it on my knee, snapping a few shots of the GF as we traveled.
- Sort of awkward for me, but funny

Still not a member of the ITAH (even though I own a 503CW and a RZ67 pro II).
I am a member of the "can you still get film" club though

I remember about a year ago I was shooting my Hassy 500 CM at Niagara Falls and was politely stopped by a young tourist who seemed to be fascinated by the looks of my camera and asked me all kinds of questions. He didn't ask the question nor was he aware of Hasselblad but still qualifies.
I was glad to chat with him and explain what I'm doing and he asked permission to take a picture of me with my camera.
No problem there, I was glad that young people show interest. Note to myself to develop that film:sad:

I have been asked this question a few times, although it never seems to be when I'm actually using my Hasselblad... The most recent occasion was three weeks ago at a restaurant when my Rolleiflex 2.8E was mistaken for a Hasselblad.

To be honest, I'm just glad that someone is taking interest in film cameras, especially medium format.

Just this past weekend- Saturday, October 29- I'm setting up a 4x5 Sinar F2 for a view of the Collegiate Mountains in Colorado on this overlook where you can see most of the peaks. Out of a black SUV come a gaggle of very curious people who are befuddled by what I was doing. The group stopped and one enthusiastic guy steps past the group, points and asks. "Hey, is that a Hasselblad?!?" I did a mental stutter-step and briefly tried to describe the difference.

Never happened before and really stuck out.

This thread is growing. I last posted to it in 2009 or so.

In the year 2009 I got a permit to photograph inside the St. Paul Cathedral (in St. Paul, Minnesota). Camera on tripod I was there early, making exposures of details in the ceiling, and an extrovert gentleman walks up and asks: 'Hey, is that a HasselBACK?'
Then he ran over to his brother in law, who also had to come over to see the Hasselback. I knew a lot about Hasselbacks after that conversation, a little too much about his family, and went on using my Hasselblad for a couple more hours...
It was so hard to not laugh and not make fun of this well meaning individual.

You should have told him that in Swedish the correct pronunciation for the name is "Hasselblad".

I don't remember very clearly what happened as it was now many years ago. I might have.

Lately I've been carrying my motorized Nikon F3 everywhere. Haven't had any ITAH moments yet, but a few weeks back my wife's extended family had group portraits made by a pro photographer (EDIT: using digital), who asked me if my Nikon was medium format. Apparently she'd never seen a 35mm camera with a motor drive?

We can't all be historians

I brought my most recent rescue-repair to Thanksgiving. My ex, who is a wonderful person and I love dearly, immediately says "that's a Hasselblad" when I grab it from the bag.

Had an open house at the artist coop where I have my shooting studio this past Saturday. Had my RB67 set up on a tripod and was twice asked: “Is that a Hasselblad?”
