Better check your sources, as they are no longer (at least) correctR09 one shot and Rodinal are similar. R09 is Rodinal, it is made by Afga and sold to the Rollei brand holders at large quantity and load by them. Aso, Afga holds the name Rodinal and won't allow anyone use it.
It does turn "dark nasty brown" relatively quickly, just does not loose its characteristics. I'm mainly discussing actual Rodinal as it is now made / sold by Adox, but R09 is close enough for this brown part at least.During my brief experience with "Compard R09 One Shot" (as pictured in post #3), it turned a dark nasty brown color in a relative short time after being opened. I was taking a university photography class, and the professor told us to use the R09 until it turned dark as coffee, then replace it. I dumped what remained of my first bottle halfway through the semester.
You can buy Adonal (same as Rodinal) in 100ml bottles.I have experience with Foma's version of Rodinal, known as 'Fomadon R09', and with Adox Rodinal.
I use both at 1+50 dilution exclusively, standard agitation, and with 120 film only. I mostly use them with Foma's own film. I've use the Fomadon R09 in the past mostly, and I use the Adox version currently.
My Adox Rodinal bottle has been opened for almost 2 years - I'm halfway through, and so I far I have not noticed issues with its performance. Someone above commented that they experienced sudden death after 4 years, which is useful to know, as I think I will have to start being careful if I decide to keep on going with this bottle.
One anecdotal observation: I notice *subtle* differences between the results I was getting with Fomadon R09 and Adox Rodinal. Big caveat (so take what I'm about to say with a pinch of salt): I have never done proper testing by e.g. splitting an exposed roll with the same scene in two and developing one strip in R09 and one in Adox Rodinal. Therefore, I cannot exclude that what I'm seeing is due to batch variation in the film used and other confounders. However: having basically translated processing times and techniques from my Fomadon R09 notes to Adox Rodinal, I detected slightly 'hotter' highlights in the negative for scenes of comparable contrast. It's almost as if Adox Rodinal is ever so slightly more 'energic', so to say, whereas the Foma one appears to be 'gentler', for the lack of a better word. I read somewhere that the two products are based on slightly different formulas, due to to copyright reasons: whereas Adox is using the license of the latest version of Rodinal manufactured by Agfa, my understanding is that the R09 products might be using older recipes. Again, I have not conducted proper testing on this.
Either way, I do not think I will keep using Adox Rodinal when the bottle goes. I see no particular advantages over the Fomadon, and the Fomadon comes in smaller bottles that, at my current pace, I can empty after a few weeks.
Both wrong.R09 one shot and Rodinal are similar. R09 is Rodinal, it is made by Afga and sold to the Rollei brand holders at large quantity and load by them. Aso, Afga holds the name Rodinal and won't allow anyone use it.
I have a bottle of R09 one shot (the Rollei Compard branded) from around 10 years ago that I used for a few rolls of film back then. I stored it in various conditions until I set up my darkroom earlier this year. Not trusting it to be any good I tested it compared to a fresh developer on identical shots on 4x5 film, and it worked correctly as far as I could tell. I have used it for some old rolls of film I had frozen after shooting years ago and they worked. Not sure how helpful that information really is but I am not complaining about having amore useful developer on hand.
Does anyone know if these developers are essentially similar to each other?
It's R09 One Shot:

I guess i need to confess. Father, I have done wrong, and bought Kodak D76 instead of Rodinal. Basically, I was led astray by certain people who like Kodak. They will remain nameless, as I was also one of them, but it's still someone else's fault, not mine, as we discussed last Sunday. The prescribed penance seems excessive though, as two brand new packages in a row looked like root-beer when mixed up as stock, and had to be discarded. We need a high priest from the Church of Rodinal to come and settle the confusion.
That, my friend, is a Blazinal bottle with a differently spelled label. It's Rodinal.
Actually, it is Morten (modafoto)The name of the high priest is Ian.
R09 One Shot has a different formula. It is a 'Rodinal clone' made by a German photochemistry manufacturer for the company Compard.
Who is producing for Compard? Their offering in BW is quite extensive. Thanks.
The name of the high priest is Ian.
Yes, quite possible there are several producers, but can you be more specific - Suvaltar, Tetenal, Calbe,...? They seem to offer several ex Agfa brews, like aforementioned Rodinal Spezial (Special) / Studional etc. They have several different suppliers. Suppliers (and with them formulas and product characteristics) have also changed in the past with some products.
Best regards,
Henning
Looking back at old prints, I think I did better with Emofin.
