As the title says, am I confusing things or Foma 100 sheet films have smoother emulsion side than it’s base?

Recently I have realised this as I have never paid attention but the emulsion side is much smoother than the base. This can potentially mean that ANR glass might be needed for the emulsion side, not the base.

I know certain films have very smooth base, like Kodak C41 films, which makes you use ANR glass for them.

Although I have never had an issue with printing Foma100 sheet film, I found it very interesting.

Or am I wrong?

I have a box of this stuff but haven't cracked it open yet. How flat does it sit? HP5 is very flat, so I don't bother with ANR glass.

Very flat actually. I have just realised how the base is textured while I was trying to create masks

I haven’t used Foma films but it is certainly possible. The Kodak T-Max films have shiny emulsion surfaces (almost indistinguishable from the base sheen), which can indeed cause Newton ring trouble. I haven’t tried Acros II but I recall the emulsion side of the old Acros being pretty shiny too. The Ilford films are the most conventional in this respect (ie relatively matte on the emulsion side).
