I can keep going with more ideas and options, but that's enough for you to get started!

Andrea, great to know that Photolab is still in business. I just pulled out your price list from 1996, perhaps I should drop by and get it updated. Still at Bancroft Way?

I'm in!!

I'm a complete beginner, but I would love to join any photographers on shooting trips or anything. That's the best way to learn. I live and work in SF. Email me to let me know where you would like to meet. I'm about to start getting into Large Format. I got the camera but need everything else. It'll take me a while to get there, but we could also go out to shoot LF.

Problem is.. you live in The City. Nothing much interesting to shoot there. perhaps you need to come down here and shoot some track homes some weekend day?

Welcome. Let us know how your LF experience is coming and what help you might need.

I live in the Bay Area (Oakland) and am keeping the darkroom practices alive and well! There are quite a few of us here and ample resources, of course including the aforementioned Rayko center for photography in San Francisco. There are also groups of us that meet up for Salon style discussions to look at and talk about work. Point in fact, The San Francisco bay area is rich with every aspect of art that you could possibly imagine and there is no shortage of amazing photographers, galleries, or museums. I couldn't make up a better place to be an artist, except perhaps New York.

Amanda. I also have both a MF and a LF camera. I'm still putting together my LF (Sinar F2 minus lens!!). My MF is a Mamiya RB67. If you ever want to get together to go on a shooting trip, let me know. (My email is macandal at yahoo.)

Hello All,

I have been living in Atlanta for the past four years but will be moving back to the Bay Area in a few weeks. I'd love to meet up with any photographers (beginners/experts) in the area. I'll be in Oakland.

daché,
Welcome to APUG and welcome (back) to Oakland. After 4-years you may not recognize Uptown, a few things have changed, but I would recommend that you check out the Joyce Gordon Gallery near 14th and Brdwy. Joyce supports young artist/photographers. Although not young I may still submit an image or two to her upcoming juried exhibition. Btw my first camera was a SRT-101.

Tim is right, this place is a workaholic pressure cooker and sometimes you just veg on a weekend. But I've seen informal bunches of film users on weekends on Treasure Island by the main gate of the old Navy base and at the rest area on 101 just north of the Golden Gate. All looking for the definitive bridge shot!

I'm just a couple miles south of the foot of the bay. Out of the industrial ugliness there are some neat spots around Alviso and the baylands. You can hit them before work or on a lunch hour- though the noon light is a challenge. I shoot MF and 35mm, B&W with a little E6.

Also we again have a rental darkroom, this one on Stockton St between the San Jose Arena and Rte 87-

Alviso, one of my favorite places.

Ya learn something new every day. I'll check out your darkroom (for those months when it's inconvenient to put up with 90 degree darkrooms).

I've found the best way to uncover the film shooter scene in SF is to carry a film camera around. Over the past month I've had a few people approach me to ask about it (my Canonet RF or Pentax 6x7) and I've approached a few.

I just came back from shooting at the Carnaval parade in the mission district, where I met up with a large group of 35mm RF/SLR folks I know. I was there with my Crown Graphic 4x5 and Canonet. I talked to at least another half dozen film shooters out there on Bryant St, mostly TLR users! I also talked briefly with a group of school kids who were all shooting film.

Hello out there,

I'm a MF (6x4.5 and 6x7) and LF (4x5) film shooter that lives in the East Bay (Hayward).

As a brief introduction, I started shooting MF (6x7) in August of 2000 and progressed to 4x5 a couple of years later. Earlier this year I finally completed my darkroom (4x5 enlarger in the bedroom, wet side in the bathroom, and Jobo in the kitchen) and shoot, develope, and print in B&W and Color (C-41 and E-6).

Would love to meet some of you!

Sounds good guys. It looks like we're spread from San Mateo to San Rafael. Any thoughts on meeting places? I'm happy to travel/shoot anywhere. Muir Woods, Drawbridge, something like that?

Is it even possible to get to Drawbridge any more? There once was a photographer who who led tours out there through a program put on by the wildlife refuge in Newark, but that was stopped by Union Pacific after they bought out Southern Pacific. You had to cross over to the island by walking over one of their bridges, and UP did not want to deal with the liability that presented.

If you do go out there, make sure that somebody is watching for trains at all times. A lookout who can warn of approaching trains is absolutely necessary. The track that runs through Drawbridge is quite busy, the trains are running fast on this part of the line, and you might not hear them until they are almost on top of you.

You can get close from the Alviso side, but you're still looking at it across the slough.

What would be the subject matter: Landscape, seascape, cityscape, architecture...

In the mean time, you're all invited for a little wine and snacks, Friday, July 3rd, at the Joyce Gordon Gallery, I have a piece in the show. The gallery is at 406 14th St, Oakland, a half a block away from the 12th Street BART station, north exit (on 14th).

This is on short notice, but how about photographing a real ghost town this Saturday, 20 June? For further info http://www.meetup.com/SF-Bay-Area-Photographers-Explorers. It's a private group (I'm the organizer) so you'll have to join but it's free. Once you are a member click on the calendar for Saturday, 20 June New Idria Ghost Town Meetup. If you want to come, just RSVP. Any question, e-mail me off the Meetup website.
