So true. And the best light meter is the one you have with you and I always carry my phone. It's not as precise as my Minolta spot meter, but it will do in a pinch. It's within a stop during most average readings.

Out of curiosity... how does it fair when metering subjects that are more than 25 feet away?

I was looking at a Sekonic with spot meter capabilities but they are more than my Hassy set up.

If this little app can save me $800 for another 6 months or so, its well worth its 99 cent price tag (in app purchase to get rid of ads) for me.

I used it on the weekend whilst my girlfriend was shooting her 'Blad. It was late afternoon, so strong sidelighting, and she was shooting our 2 Golden Retrievers. Bit of a tough subject, but it did a really good job. As a spot meter, it is a great backup to my regular meter.

Down in my part of Texas we wear the holster and carry the iPhone in a pocket. Seriously though, I got my iPhone used, like my film cameras, and got the light meter app just to see how cheap a "game" it was. But after checking it, I was surprised it does seem to work well enough for good lighting situations with snapshot film. To those doing business with their smart phone I will be getting the credit card terminal next.

Again, it's free, so if you already have an iPhone, why the heck not?

Never really understood people in such opposition to start using new (free) tools, what ever happened to curiosity?
- At least you will have a backup, should something happen.

The iPhone meter is better than my l-208 and my l-358 in the sense that I can actually see what I am metering with the iphone app, with my regular meters, it's guesswork, and I don't like to guess (or dish out $600 for a Seconic -758 with a proper spot meter on it).

I should leave well enough alone... but, I saw there was an upgrade to this app and I downloaded it to my iPod. Now it crashes when launched. Doesn't work at all. The iOS is the very latest.

Restart your iPod sometimes helps.

Gosh - my ancient Gossen never ever crashes. Nor does it make annoying noises. And, it cost a whopping nothing 20 years ago.

I tested out the latest version a couple of days ago while checking the frame spacing on a new rollfilm back, and the exposures were spot on.

I've been using it for months, it's more accurate than my Sekonic selenium meter although I still want a real spot meter.
I log the shots and that's my EXIF data for when I write up my notes later.
