I saw the 3rd issue entitled Focus at Barnes and Noble. Regardless of the personal feuds between the Focus staff and different individuals I find the magazine to be a worthwhile purchase and would place it in the top 3 that regularly read. Its obviously well above the run of the mill Petersens/Pop Photo type mags out there and thats a good thing.

Wow, thank you for your compliment, Daniel. Thank you all for your kind comments...we're trying our very best to make every issue superior to the last.

Yes... I saw the second issue at Borders. I haven't seen the third issue on the newsstaands yet but I think it just went out to the subscribers last week.

I've not seen either of the 1st two issues at either Borders or Barnes&Noble, and I've looked at both bookstores every week.

I've seen Inked at one of the Barnes & Nobles - I bought it, and pretty well enjoyed the issue, except for the Jeff Alu article.

Both the Barnes & Noble in Washington Center and the Borders in Gaithersburg Square carry B+W, Lenswork, Black & White, PDN, View Camera, Camera Arts, Aperture and BlindSpot. But no Focus or Inked, ever.

My office zip is 22030. There's a Borders about 1 mile from here. I haven't seen it there, either.

Nothing yet

So far I have not received anything.

Can you please update us on the situation? I was thinking about subscribing, but if no one receives magazines they pay for, then I won't.

Then Please pick up the phone and call David, I will pay for the G.D. call. PM me the charges and I will pay you via Pay Pal!

It may well be that Thom does not need either your advice or your money. I took out a 6-issue subscription a while back, was told this would start with issue #3, paid an extra $7 or so for a copy of issue #2 2 weeks ago and have also received nothing. The publisher indicated, I believe, in a recent posting that he had personal problems making demands on his time, but I too am beginning to wonder if I'll ever get any magazines! And I HAVE contacted the publisher several times privately about this!

Well by posting here he'll get advice, it's what happens when you post publicly.

I don't care what problems one may be having with a small business man (one trying to serve a dying art it so happens) You just don't go public with them and attack his whole enterprise over your lousy few bucks. It is petty and mean spirited. The man is NOT B&H.

I've changed my mind and retract the offer of paying for the call and will put it toward a subscription.

Said my piece, I'm done with the subject and won't extend the life of this thread which deserves to sink into oblivion.

Well as a person,

That started my own magazines, and understand how difficult it is.....I commend David for keeping with it,

And David and Thom, I will reimberse you the monies you feel you are out, just to give David a hand up, I would do the same for anyone trying to become independant..

Seems to me, all David has to do is send it Priority or FedEx, signature required to end all speculation.

Good point Robert, and in all fairness..it has only been a week since he said he sent them out (guessing they actually went out the next day, since the post was later in the day on the 12th). Am also amazed at how some feel that the $37.50 is not worth asking about...maybe some have that kind of money to throw away, but if you were to order xxx item for that kind of money and did not get it...well I would be trying my best to find out why. If someone feels that is too small of a amount to fuss about that's fine, but don't slam someone becuase they feel it is not.

I do feel there are other ways to have handled the entire situation, but both parities deserve better than they have been given here...I hope that it does get resolved because it would be a win-win for both and the subject can be dropped.

Not often do I feel this, and the owner of Focus and I have had our differences, but it seems as if a few that have the ability to post to the internet, seem to want to ridicule others who are trying to make a living, $37.50 to me is a bit of money, and if I feel I have lost it, I am darn sure I am going to make sure I know why, but as a small business man who relys on the various shipping companies in the US, I do understand that things can and do go wrong...many who want to complain, might want to at least give the benefit of the doubt and let the company at least try to work the situation out...

When someone emails me, and says, the glass never showed up, I have to 100% take them on their word that it did not, now I have no way of knowing they are telling me true or pushing the system, but know I have to send another, because something of this nature will crop up and the business person will never be the winner...and I am sure David feels the same, he is a small business owner, that is trying his best, and I can't expect anyone else to do any better.

Dave, hope you did not take my post wrong, I have all the confidence in the world with you and your work. And applaud your willingness (is that really a word) to try to get this issue settled. After all, planning to place Another order with you, so you know I feel you will do what you say you will do.

And with all respect think the two parties involved could have settled this with a confirmation of address (which may have been done...none of my business) on the one side and as Robert suggest signature required on the other...seems simple, but sometimes there are other forces at work we may not be aware of. Since I do not personally know either individual, can't say either one is wrong or right...but do hope they can resolve it...and let's hope there is not someone in Denver tonight thumbing through some nice magazines and wondering why in the heck they were delivered to their door and who Thom is? Now that would be unfair to both parties involved and yet seems like a real possiblity condsidering the way some things get delivered.

Mike,

I did not take any of your post wrong, just trying to show, that perhaps all that gets said, may not be all that is true...and believe you me, David and I don't agree on just about anything, but I am still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, I am sure he is trying to get things straightened out, and I am sure he will

Look forward to being service again Mike.

Thanks..

Dave

David, I've sent you magazines via FedEx and paid royally through them. Also mind you that I did not charge you extra for an international subscription, something no magazine ever does.

Hey, thanks Dave, fulfillment orders are 99% good. I have about 5 or 6 orders a day on my website and send them out every Friday via UPS, FedEx or USPS. I do what I can from a home office. UPS, FedEx and USPS all come to my door at time ranges every Friday and I send out everything that I receive orders for.

Okay, it's an interesting thing with magazine distribution companies. I am using Speedimpex and Disticor as my ambassadors to Borders and Barnes & Noble. It's a new magazine and as much as I'd like for them to match number of copies and stores where B&W and LenseWork are, it just doesn't work like that. However if our 3rd and 4th issues do as well as our second issue did at bookstores, well, i think they'll put it in all the stores B&W and Lensework are. It's a fantastic market with a lot of very high quality publications.

Okay, so getting to your zip code. From zip code 20878 there is a Borders at 20926 FREDERICK RO, in Germantown. According to MapQuest it's 11 minutes from your zip code. You can call 301.528.0862 and ask them to hold a copy for you.

Dave, a year before I had even heard of APUG I did a lot of market research and focus groups and gave 1000 free lifetime subscriptions to those who participated in these groups. After that, for another year, I offered 4 issues for $16. I don't care if you're paying me $1 for an issue, you pay me money, or somehow contribute to the magazine, you're getting an issue. David Beddington lives in England, it takes 3 weeks for the post office to get copies to subscribers in Las Vegas...it takes a while to get magazines internationally. Now if people want their magazine ASAP, they can pay me for the extra shipping charges, I can have UPS come on a non-scheduled day and have it to them before 10:30 the next morning. The least expensive and most efficiant way for me to send out magazines is 3rd class mail...well, for now that is. I'd love to qualify for Media Mail, but the USPS says I don't qualify for it, yet (I send out a good deal of promotional copies to advertisers in my competition).

Thanks for the response, David. Just a general point - in my experience, magazines DO charge extra for international subscriptions, and I certainly don't expect anyone to sell me a magazine below cost. It might be worthwhile offering faster more expensive mailing at least as an option, I for one would be glad to pay for this.

Sorry for the misspelling...it is on the list of things to do along with adding a bookstore on the website. Right now Photo NY and the Collector's Edition take priority.

Hey Dave,

Looking forward to meeting with you at Photo NY! Any Apugers up for a brew?
