To make it even more short:

A helpful idea. But not necessary.

(By the way, not all were angry. Not me.)

Does anyone have one of the kits?
Do the accompanying instructions explain how to transition to the more economical options?
"Gateway" comes to mind.

I don't know if photo classes at colleges still do film, but that would seem to be a target market for something like this. If you want to spend 2-3x the amount you can get enough chemicals to do 30 rolls, but if you're in a photo class at school, you may not need that much, and may not want to deal with storing mixed chemicals.

So basically £7.50 to process a roll of film. How does this compare to local labs?
labs are no comparison to the satisfaction that comes from being able to do it yourself; When I started,I was too scared to to it myself; Now, I would;dn't trust anybody else with doing it for me; never got negs as good as mine from any lab.

Becqause I was in a hurry, I just had a roll of 120 processed this week and it was about $7.50. Compared to $1.50 to do myself at home. This product is either the best of both, or the worst, depending on one's perspective.

Two things should not be overlooked.

Maco

-) started the use of stand-up pouches in 2010

-) offer since 2014 a ready-to-use C-41 kit in such pouches, thus working solutions (thus the peak of simplicity)

True, I used that C41 kit to get into colour development. But I moved in to the normal Digibase chemicals after the one kit. Finally made it to Flexicolor.

Here in Europe too?

Yes, in Stuttgart next to the Hauptbahhoff there is a square, in one corner (if my memory is correct) there was a massive photographic shop. Ground floor was all cameras projectors, that kind of stuff, with the cellar (Keller?) being pretty much all darkroom stuff; heaven for a darkroom junkie.

I needed some chemistry to develop my films before returning home, also to see how things were being exposed. They had Ilford chemistry ID11 in 600ml and up amounts for sale. They also had Kodak chemistry in wine pouches, which is what we called them in Australia. Cannot remember whether it was colour or B&W, but I certainly remember them.

I'm pretty certain this was winter (in Germany) 1993/1994. If not, then Winter 96/97.

A few doors away was a massive bookstore, magical place. I bought Vanity Fair, by William Makepiece Thackeray, a three book series beautifully printed and presented, as only German publishers seem to be able to do. Small, but takes up a special place on our bookshelves.

When I started photography in the 70s there were Kodak chemicals not even available local, that never changed.

A general comment on the thread, and that's the use of distilled water. Not all so-called distilled water is! And by no means is all UK tap water that pure. Water companies add chemicals in various amounts - in particular aluminium sulphate. Chlorine, fluorosilic acid, calcium hydroxide and sodium silicofluoride are also common additions to the UK mix in varying proportions depending on source. Certainly precious few water supplies are 'neutral' and in some urban centres and properties with old, lead or iron piping the use of chemical additive has resulted in water that may be just about acceptable to drink, but may not result in the perfect brew for film processing. Some years ago, I bought a not-too-expensive domestic distiller, and use only water that has been processed through this for making up solutions as well as initial wash sequences. The resulting negatives have meen much cleaner, free of scum or microbubbles. Hard to tell whether it makes a difference to the performance of developers, but to my mind results from Rodinal are better.

Legislation on this varies even within the EU. In Germany for instance chlorination is illegal exept for shorttime use after accidents.

(This will not say that there are no contamination issues in Germany, e.g. nitrate. A EU-wide regulation is in the making.)
