Does anyone have any experience of using Ilford Classic for 2nd pass lith? I’ve been gifted a lot of unopened LD20 and have a box full of over exposed prints, that could be worth experimenting on.

Hi David

This doesn't quite answer your question, but the attached snap is a test on Ilford Warmtone. Looks like it was overexposed by a third stop, bleached as stated, (from home made formula), but was re-developed in Moersch not the Fotospeed. It works to an extent, but was not quite as subtle as I wanted. It was a relatively normal contrast on the original print so maybe if it had been a grade or two softer might have been better. I also don't think the photo suits the process though was a reject shot from a shoot. Far prefer the main one as does the subject! www.mike-crawford.co.uk

I think I also did tests at the same time on Ilford Classic, which also worked, though presume as I took a picture of this one to send to a friend, this must have been the most successful. I certainly got good results in the past using Ilford Multigrade IV. I'm back at work on Monday so will see if I can find the tests on Classic next week, though can't promise I still have them!!

Thank you Mike. I have tried 2nd pass with Warmtone, but not with much success. I'll probably try some bleach tests early next week with Classic. Thanks for the link to your site I enjoyed looking through your pictures, particularly the Nocturne series.

Hi David

Thanks for kind words. The Nocturnes are all lith printed on old Oriental Seagull G4 and shot on Delta 3200. Eventually my stash of paper will run out so perhaps the project will then be over!!

I realised I had shots of all the tests I did on my laptop, including Ilford Multigrade Classic, so quickly put the attached together. First is normal print, 2nd is overexposed by 1/3 stop, bleached for 1 minute, 3rd is overexposed by 1/3 stop, bleached for 1 minute 15 seconds. (Didn't note the re-development time but not really relevant as done by inspection.) Less bleaching has more neutral shadows and prefer it to the 1.15. If you are interested, I can let you know the ratio and dilution of the Potassium Ferricyanide / Potassium Bromide bleach. From these, I would maybe try more Pot Bromide and a probably a weaker dilution and a softer print. When there is time, I must do some more tests.

Thanks again Mike, that good info I can use as a starting point.
