Ilford 35mm still film

Just want to say that I love Ilford's B&W films, especially their HP5+. Now I'd better have a coffee and go out and buy a few more rolls. I'm down to one spare.

Frank, it comes out cheaper to buy it by the 50-roll bulk pack. I have two or three of those boxes in my freezer left from when there was the scare that Ilford was going out of business. Have a cup of joe for me!

If you buy in bulk rolls of 100 ft., and get a bulk loader cheap on ebay, you save many $ in the long run.

Buying a box sounds like a good plan. I'll check it out. (I do have other Ifford films in the fridge, by the way. It's just that I love the HP5+ best.)

Call me cheap. I only bought 5 rolls of 36. Should last me a bit since I only shot about 7 frames today. All dogs. One had one black eye and one blue eye; but because HP5+ is not colour, this won't show.

Ilfochrome was the first film I ever shot, and then a roll of XP2, I've remained a hopeless fan ever since. I'm gunning to buy a stack of HP5 and some FP4 from vanbar at some stage, or from a local store. A local Ted's Camera store here, complete with giant shelf of digital cameras, still has a fridge of Ilford films and some papers+chemicals on the shelves.
I'd like to steal their fridge.

FP4+ compared to HP5+ is, in a word, "stunning"!

That said, whilst they are both like films, there are some real differences.

I find that FP4+ is brilliant for portraiture, providing you zero in your exposue, developing and printing.

HP5+ by comparison, is not quite as brilliant. I believe this is mainly due to the faster speed, amongst other things photographic that I know very little about.

If you have been using HP5+ for quite some time, you no doubt have your exposure, developing & printing well sorted. Remember that if you switch to FP4+ you'll require a similar dialling in period.

It is really a brilliant film!

Next time I go buy film, I'll pick up a roll to try it. I have my exposure down pat: I use "auto."

I also use Rodinal with HP5+ and get good results. I mix it with a sodium sulfite solution. At 68 degrees, 11.5 minutes a 1:75 for 400 speed. I adjust the dilution, not the time, for pushing...1:50 for 800 speed.

This works for me with my cameras, my meters, my enlargers and my thermometers but it will likely need adjustment for anyone else's methods.

Franck,if you want to spend less money but have more film,you may buy 30 meters bulk rolls. It's approx 50% less.
I hope Ilfordis goingkeeping producing them. May be Simon R Galley couldtellus aout that

Does this tame the grain and not reduce the sharpness?

yup! i am a fan now! i used XP2 first. i needed C41 process capabilities. it turned out perfect. i enlaged a 120 neg to 24x30, it looks great! then i tried fp4 in 4x5.....WOW, my new favorite. i am just begining to work with HP5.

XP2. That's another one I didn't try, although I saw someone's XP2 prints once. Neat effect.

Perhaps you can explain why shooting a dog with one black eye and one blue eye will not be visible in B&W.

The striking blue colour of one eye won't be visible.

Very critical that the concentration is correct . I use two teaspoons of sulfite per 8 ounces of solution. It does smooth out the grain. Negatives are still sharp. Tonality is still beautiful. It does speed up the development times a bit, as well. Kind of looks like using D76 but with better shadow and highlight detail.
