Shame about going towards shirts with collars. I don't understand why Ilford could not simply make their film logo designs available through some place like Cafe Press:

http://www.cafepress.com/

That way anyone who might want a T-Shirt or coffee mug could just order one. There would be no inventory to store, and only a slight amount of time getting the files onto that website (or any similar company). In theory, someone could order a T-Shirt with each film variety.

I agree, I think Ilford would be better off with this no risk method.

The quality of cafepress is not as good as the traditional stuff. If we are all as good as our words and buy an ilford thirt, then maybe they will build out their line of branded goods.

I agree with jd, cafepress' quality for shirts just isn't up to par. Ilford brand items deserve better quality.

What is the downside of Cafe Press, or another company like that? Is the screen printing not that great? I notice their top quality T-Shirts now come from American Apparal, which is very well made for a 100% cotton T-Shirt.

As an alternative, would Ilford be willing to let another screen printing company produce T-Shirts? Basically license a design to be made, with approval from Ilford.

Sorry to be a pain in the ass. I don't have any interest in polo shirts, which are out of fashion for all except the golfing crowd (at least in Southern California). I would greatly prefer a T-Shirt, and I don't think I am the only one. I'm a walking cliché of a working photographer, and almost exclusively wear black T-shirts (unless I am wearing a black sweater).
:D

Ciao!

Ilford isn't screen printing the indicia they are having it embroidered. The screen printing of cafepress is at the low end and embroidering, in my book, trumps screen printing every time.

I'm not a huge fan of tees or polo shirts, but a heavy Rugby shirt is fine.

I'd prefer a merino wool cowl neck cardigan with an Ilford patch over the left breast or a black silk turtle neck with Ilford embroidered on the collar-- it gets cold in the early and late hours which is when I do most of my photography.

As it is I need to start buying more of their product. Currently I only use their paper and fixer.

Is screenprinting the stuff that forms a layer on top of the fabric that cracks?

screen printing is slik screened. I think the stuff that cracks most often is the the heat transfer decals, although screen printing can crack as well.

Screen printing does crack, it's just a matter of time. I have some official NFL and NBA team shirts which had screen-printed graphics which cracked after being in the wash dryer. Now 90% of all my shirts either have no graphics or logos or them, and if they do, I prefer them to be embroidered since it'll last longer.

It's great to have the Ilford brand and logo on polo shirts; it'll help me introduce B&W photography to my co-workers and friends. Just imagine this conversation at the water-cooler:

"What's that logo on your polo shirt for?"
"Oh this? Ilford's a B&W film company. They make different types of B&W film and paper."
"You still shoot B&W film?"
"You bet! B&W photography is so fun! In fact, I just came back from my holiday in Europe, and I shot 50 rolls of Ilford HP5+. Do you want to see them?"
"Sure! I didn't know anyone else who still shoots film, let alone B&W film."

By cracking I mean areas of the logo where the fabric shows through. I take it that the ilford shirt will be more robust. I have plenty of thinkgeek tshirts where the text looks like #% ^@.

but ILFORD's trademark has black letters on a white bkgrnd

Yes there is...we have chosen what we would like, based on the feedback, ILFORD Photo, white on black, embroidered not screen printed, a polo shirt and a rugby shirt. 'Less is more' according to the fashionistas at ILFORD Photo / HARMAN who are helping me sort this out...
Regards Simon.

No, no, no.... ILFORD's fashionistas have inverted the tones. Compare the suggested shirt style to all but one of ILFORD's eight film boxes which have black printing on a white background !!!! Why can't at least some of the shirts follow suit ???? I mean even the ILFORD logo (on the website) is black text on a white background.

Are they worried about us getting the shirt dirty ? I promise to wash it well and remove all the stains. I demand to know the reasoning behind such a choice!! Black is soooo not my shade, I cast my vote way back earlier in this thread for black on white  . I don't want to sound like a whining little kid, but pleeeeeease can we also have black letters on a white shirt ???

regards from your free, keen, walking, talking advertising billboard to be.

Please tell your fashionistas that some of us really want t-shirts...please?

Black T-Shirts can be used as darkclothes and even an emergency changing bag in sufficiently subdued light. They also provide the distinct illusion of pretentious creativity if worn with a Black sport jacket, pants, socks and shoes.

Hey, who says it's an illusion?

a black rugby shirt should be just as good if not better at being a dark cloth. In the USA the obscurity of a rugby shirt will insinuate a bit of mystery and athleticism. Mate the shirt with black jeans, pseudo italian soccer (football) trainers and a man purse and you'll look down right continental.

I'm good with a rugby shirt and look forward to ordering mine.

I always thought that only applied to black roll neck shirts with black leather jackets. I always associate black T-shirts on middle aged men with people like Simon Cowell.

Don't you need a crumpled Gauloise dangling from the corner of your mouth and a dogeared copy of anything by Camus/Sartre poking out of a pocket to give you that certain je ne sais quoi mon brave?

I too would be interested in an Ilford T-shirt. Promoting Black and White conventional photography is important.

Totally agree. Make sure your teeth are coffee-stained, too.

Now how does one translate that to the female photographer? I mean, is it at all possible for me, a woman, to look really cool and artsy? I guess not... Smoking kills, and the greasy leather bags you need to carry that Camus and the Leica don't go well with my outfit.

A stylish black beret perhaps? lots of black(it's the new black this season........)?A pair of shades might help as well, though as a straight English bloke I'm not really qualified to give advice on fashion LMSO

I wouldn't blame Ilford if they wanted to see the response to their initial offering of Ilford-logo apparel before adding other items. I do think that giving a nice design to CafePress.com for those who want coffee mugs and other items is a really good suggestion. And I would still want your rugby shirt and whatever else you care to offer. I don't think that the CafePress offerings would cannibalize sales of the items you have mentioned.

Well, rugby shirts are a non-starter here in the tropics. Polo shirts are fine, but black will be too hot. I have a black polo shirt, but only wear it when I go out at night. I'll still buy one with Ilford on it, but I won't wear it as much as I would a white t-shirt.
