In another thread, Ralph mentioned the use of a special tool used to cock the shutter if it's been fired but the body hasn't. I googled it and it's called a FotodioX CameraKey. How many of you have one of these, or do you make due with a coin. The owner of the kit I'm interested in, just used a coin.

I have one, but I don't think it is the Fotodiox version... there's others who make this.

Anyway, I wouldn't get one if it were just for the lenses as a coin would suffice (but in fact these days, there's a good chance I wouldn't have any coins on me). However, if the body jams, you need to get into the cocking mechanism from the back side under the mirror and up to the front of the body and a coin won't work in this situation, The other end of the tool is designed for that.

I've not needed to use it for that purpose so far, but I have it just in case. It does work well for the lens cocking, too. I find very rarely, a lens gets jostled and the shutter must trip, so I (very rarely) occasionally need to re-cock the shutter on a lens. It's good to have the too for that and also to be aware that this occurs so if you find trouble when switching lenses, to be aware and check this before any attempts to use muscle on anything.

Yesterday,I began printing the snow pictures from earlier this week and my 25+ year old Zone VI VC cold light head died - well the yellow light did. Replacement parts are nonexistent so I wrote a rather painful cheque to Catlabs for a new Heiland LED VC head.

I had planned to get one eventually and was sort of saving for it but one day of printing with the original Omega condenser and above the glass Ilford filters was so maddening, slow and error prone, I gave in an ordered the new head.

I guess I don't really need to eat this month.

Grrrrr.

(Have a nice trip).

This will deserve a new thread, but I will be very interested to read how you like the (rather expensive) Heiland setup. As matter of (off-topic) interest, which controller did you choose?

Some years ago one who was a top notch photographer, Mario Algaze, had me print a limited edition series of four of his favorite images in pt/pd/au. Another friend, Carl Juste who is a top photojournalist did a series Havana and Haiti that I hope will be published as a book. As much as you claim to not be taking a camera you should at least take a point and shoot. You will be kicking yourself for not taking one. If nothing else try Havana Club rum it will be worth the trip and perhaps drown your sorrow for leaving a camera at home.

Nope. Never been. I think Mexico is more of a favourite for Canadians... never been there, either.

We went to Cuna about 15 years ago. It's a beautiful country, especially the mountains on the west side. After 10 days travelling around the excesses of the all-inclusive on the north side were pretty distressing. (it was a package tour,). Such a warm and exhilarating people that was having a rough time (I think still is,)
Indulge in Cuban culture, butt put aside the "traditional western view" of it. Hemingway and old cars is our version of Cuba, not theirs.

I think Cuba is a bit more popular as a destination for Canadians in the eastern parts of the country.
Not surprisingly, given the distances involved.
Toronto being approximately 2200 km by air from Havana and in the same time zone.
Compare that to where Andrew and I are - Vancouver approximately approximately 4600 km by air from Havana and in the same time zone. from Havana and being three time zones away.
Interestingly, the distance between Toronto and Vancouver is approximately 3400 km by air.

Speaking of Hasselblads. I just checked with Jim Holman at ICT. He does complete teardowns and CLAs on them for around $350-ish plus parts. He's guessing turnaround times of about 1 month.

I was super happy with how he redid my Nikon F Apollo FtN, I am likely to have him do my 25 year old 501C/M next.
