Not really related, but has anyone noticed how many silver N75s have a cracked exposure mode dial? It doesn’t seem to hurt anything, but it looks bad. If you look at photos of N75s on the net, about half of them have cracked knobs, mine does, but it seldom gets used. With an F100 and two N80s, I can’t afford the film to feed all of them.

Yes, mine exposure ring cracked and fell off my N75 a couple of years ago. I responded by buying an N80 as a backup.

I fixed the crack in mine with some super-glue gel, hardly noticeable.

One part fell off. I lifted off the other part. Then I threw them out. About a week later, I realized that I could have glued the two parts back on.

My fix seemed to work ok, I’ve looked for replacement knobs to no avail and I don’t know how much of a job it would be to replace it if It was available.

N80 gets a checkup with my new toy. Shutter speed 1/4000 a little slow, but it is within Nikon specs. From what I can tell there is no way to adjust it, unlike a cloth horizontal shutter. (dTV = EV)

Last weekend I used my 18-35G on my F6 on a wildflower safari, and an N80 w the 28-80 G for local stuff.

First off - I know it is much harder to make an 18-35 vs the 28-80, but I was surprised as to how much better performing the 28-80 was. Way sharper (and this mattered in the way I used the 18-35). Yah, I know it is 'only' a 28-80, but it is a 28-80 built to a budget as a kit lens, while the 18-35 most definitely was not and was way more expensive.

I now wish I took the 28-80 instead. And then the N80 has that other very obvious bonus - the grid lines so I could have lined everything up much easier. A couple of times that pop up fill flash would have been nice too....

Maybe the next thread should be to sing the praises of the 28-80G? It really is a fantastic general use lens, for very little money.

N80, 28-80G, C200

The cheapskate 28-80G is best being used around F8-F11. The 28-70/3.5-4.5D is better, and it was also one of two "Kit"lenses for the F100. But sometimes, i do shoot the 28-80G on my F65, because both together is way small & light, and nobody, noone ever will you take seriously with that little plastic combo. Despite the features, i do prefer my F60 from the grip, haptics and OVF anytime over any F75/F65, and my 2nd copy was only 10 bucks, so what's not to like for a 35mm AF SLR? My 1st copy was much more, into 1998.

I've been reading the N80 vs. _________ threads on the internet. I've discovered that the N80 is a plastic piece of crap and that I should get an N90s instead. No wait, an F100, instead. No wait, an F5 instead. Really, if someone gave me an N80 I should just throw it away and get a real camera.

What the heck. These folks constantly rattle on about how rugged the alternatives to the N80 are and seem to forget that not everyone is photographing war crimes in a war zone and that most of us who buy and use an N80 are hobbyists who may run a roll of film through them per month - or less. For most of the current buyers of an N80, I'd wager the camera will last a lifetime. And, yes, we all know about the fragility of the door latch, but how much trouble is it to open and close a film door carefully?

You're right. I admit to not being very truthful in my post. The camera is dumpster bait. For real. I wouldn't buy one for...let's see...more than $5 with lens included.

If anyone is reading this and has one of these cursed cameras, please PM me for my address. I'd like for you to send it to me for my granddaughter's camera recycling drive at school. Think of the good you'll be doing for children and the environment.

I’ve got two N80s and an F100, I’m more inclined to grab an N80. No, I can’t drive nails with it but it’s a whole lot more fun to carry, it doesn’t weigh much more than my D5600 and it also has the built-in flash, much handier than an F100 with a SB 27 speedlight, ugh!. It might be what the pros carry but they get paid for it...

Don't kid yourself. Those N80's need to be recycled immediately. Come to think of it, so does that F100.

The 28-80G is a terrific lens on any AF Nikon, and more or less comes free if buying a body. Underrated because it's a 'kit' lens but Nikon threw a lot of experience into designing it. As a comparison the 24-70 S kit lens for the Z also gets high praise.

I haven't used my N80 for a while. I picked up an N90s for $7.50 a while back. Haven't used that either. The N90s is built better than the N80 but the N80 is a better picture taker for sure. I still need to pick up a 50 for them. Then I'll get some use out of them. Not too fond of zooms anymore.

I prefer the Nikon 28mm to 200mm AF zoom lens and the Tamron 28mm to 300mm AF zoom lens because it means that I almost always have the right lens for the moment and both a macro focus for very close ups. One of those and my Nikon 20mm to 35mm lens are all I need to a long vacation in Europe, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia and many other places.

Just correcting myself from #562 above. It is possible to adjust the shutter; it is done electronically via a computer interface. It shows this in the repair manual.

I have been using these late-model AF Nikon SLRs since 2012 and see they are getting harder to find in mint condition. I think it is worthwhile to service them, so I have been looking into this.

I did find the N75 service manual (it is $1.00 at the Learn Camera Repair site) and it is amazing. It has detailed COLOR photographs of the disassembly process. Though one still needs to get access to the computer program for the diagnostics.
