I recently found a $100 bill outside of a convient/drug store and the manager was right up front and told her about what I found. She asked if I wanted to turn it in and wait the 5 days to see if anyone claims it. I did and 5 days later, she called me and I picked it up because no one claimed it. She was very appreciative of my honesty. I felt $100 was a hell of a lot of money for someone, so maybe they'll find it. I tried. But I'm going to donate some of the money to a cause. (No, not my film gear cause.)

There's a "social experiment" video online of a guy pretending to be blind and verbally asking for change from people on the street for a $5 bill but showing and handing them a $50. Nice to see those few who tell him it's actually a $50 he's holding and surprising and sad to see those many others who give him $5 in change and happily walk away with his $50. The blind guy should have know better darn him!

In your case above he was thankful because he would have had to make up the shortfall in the till at the end of the day...

But as someone above said honesty is how you act when no one else is looking. And I'm a big believer in karma. You might get your benefit now and you can chalk it up as if it's some "harmless" gain and it's a faceless company and they should have known better or been more careful but...anyone who would call taking advantage of another's financial error "good luck" tells me volumes about them.

But see post 31 for the difference between the OP's situation (which probably hold true in many more places than just non-French-speaking Canada) and these social experiments, or finding money on the street, or being asked to put a value on somebody's collection...

There is a fundamental difference between accepting an offer posted for an item on the internet, and accepting too much change.

In the former case, you don't know that there was an error, in the latter case you do.

In the former case, you don't know that you are taking unfair advantage, in the latter case you do.

So I don't understand why the OP is getting so much flak about this. For all anyone knows, KEH just needed to dump some old inventory - it is near the end of the year, they are having a big sale, and inventory season is just around the corner (probably). For all we know, this has been in inventory for 2 years. It is a film camera, which aren't flying off anyone's shelves.

Yes, it may have been an error, but that's not the OP's fault, and nobody here knows for sure. Maybe, as others pointed out, KEH was bumping up the price in anticipation of the current sale, and in doing so, a finger slipped. So, is it morally better for KEH to raise prices for a sale, then get caught when they goof? Maybe if they hadn't raised the price (and inadvertently lowered it), they would be sitting on the camera for another x period of time. If it was an error, let KEH catch it.

The OP got a smokin' price on a great camera. Good for him. Those of you on the high moral pedestal bashing him are probably just jealous....

Look, some people think it's ok (seller beware, I guess?), others feel it would have been best to confirm if it was a mistake or not. I'm the latter. And if the time to find out if it was a mistake or not was important I guess you could buy it to secure it and then call and ask. That's what I'd do. They might indeed be so pleased by the honesty they'd say yes, a mistake but you can have it anyway, or give him a huge but fair discount for his honesty. Or not. I'd be too worried an employee might be severely reprimanded for the mistake or be expected or forced to make up for the huge difference from personal funds like a cashier would on a short cash register till. The OP knows darn well it was a mistake as he posted on the initial posting that he has knowledge of what these cameras go for normally, and an EX camera of this caliber from KEH is not sold for $28. We all know that.

But that's me. Ok, I'm done with this thread.

Even at $228 that's one heck of a deal, IMHO, for that camera. I think I would have called them and ask if that $22.80 was for real. If not, I would have cleared my conscience and gladly have paid the $228.

Post 31 does not address the value judgment of "fair price" or "ethics". It discusses a vendor proffering an offer for sale of an item.

I guess my refusal to take advantage of others' mistakes is why I live in a crappy old trailer in a poor rural area. I'd rather live like this than lose my integrity. I can't even begin to tell how many times I've told sellers their price is too low and let them out of a deal. I also can't even begin to tell you how many times I've been ripped off. It's not very pleasant when it happens to us, is it?

Go see eBay, $228 is not far off the going price and some are even a little cheaper.

I know that this is going to sound like splitting hairs ...

I've never said that you should take advantage of others' mistakes.

I've said that until you know that a mistake has been made (as compared to just an aggressive price reduction in a volatile market) than you should not assume that the price was unintentional.

There might be other pieces of information that would almost certainly lead you to the conclusion that a price was a mistake - things like warranty plan offered based on a higher price, or one of those similar items listings that show prices that are radically different.

But for a retailer that sells in a volatile market, I think you are entitled to initially assume that a low price is part of that market.

If KEH had got back to the OP and said it was a mistake, I would never suggest that you insist that they honour the mistake.

I just got a good deal myself from KEH. I bought a Minolta Auto Meter III for $41.50! Not bad. It has a Silicon photo cell and uses a 9v battery instead of the old hard to get mercury battery and have to do some sort of conversion or buy an adapter.
