If you are using a focal plane shutter you will be limited to the synchronization speed of 1/30, 1/60 or 1/90 seconds, depending on the manufacturer and model.

If you have a leaf shutter, you may be able to use X synchronization up to 1/500 second. I would think that the Rollei TLRs would synchronize up to 1/500 second.

That's what I'm hoping for. I have a Metz 32 CT4 I'll give it a try with. My Nikon's all sync at 1/250th (except for the older FE which is 1/125) so it's not that big of a deal if I can't sync at 1/500th, just something for more control over DOF.

One other ignorant question seeing as I've never used a TLR before in my life - It came with a set of Walz Waltzar close up filters #1 - one filter is very tiny and the other is much longer. Both are marked #1 while one also has Parawalz (or something similar) written on it. How are these used? Do you put the little one on the taking lens and the long one on the viewing lens or vice versa? Are you supposed to stack the two filters and after focusing move them to the taking lens? Kind of fun to be able to focus below 3 feet, and I'm just curious how they're supposed to be used.

Assuming the Walz close up lenses works like the Rolleinars, you put the thinner lens on the taking lens, and the thicker one (with parallax correction) on the viewing lens. It should have a marking for the up-side.

I don't know about the quality of the japanese Walz accessories, but the Rolleinars are very good.

Perfect! Y'all are a wealth of knowledge. I got a few hits when I posted on an other forum, but nothing like the outpouring I've gotten here. I'll make sure to post a few photos when I get the camera back. I'm going to shoot some Portra 160 with it to start out. And I think I'll try the walz filters first before I get a Rolleinar - they're going for more then I paid for the camera.

Mudman, try this with Portra 160. Set the camera @ f/8,1/125th, flash @f/4 or F/2.8, outdoors in open shade, it gives just a Kiss of flash,fills in eye socket & nose shadows.

Alan - what flash GN is that, and what distance are you shooting from? I think I know what you mean though - in Auto mode, flash at f4 or f2.8. I do this regularly with my Nikon, after reading Galen Rowell's book "Inner guide to Outdoor Photography"

Mudman, I used a Metz 60 Ct4,also used a 45 Ct1, but can be done with any thyristor controlled flash gun. I normally used it when shooting 3/4 and full length portraits of bride & groom. Modern auto everything cameras & flashes take care of this nowdays, but under some circumstances they can over do it. You may have to experiment abit for your part of the world/sunlght, you may like to try some Fuji 400 NPH, just adjust accorddingly.

Hehe I've got it!! Already Loaded with Kodak Porta 160. I'll post photos of it and from it later. Can't wait to test drive it. It turns out someone had put in two focusing screens - one with a fresnel the other the original, so that's why the focus was a little weird to look through.

Hey, I have my Rolleiflex sitting right here on the desk with me. I have the same lens, and just printed a negative from the camera. The prints were for the Group Print Exchange round #12 here on APUG. Once every one in my group has their prints I'll post the image to General Gallery. I'm always impressed, great camera. Have fun with it. BTW I paid 350 USD for mine, but that was in 1996 and it was super clean with the chrome hinged lens cap.

RT - Mine has the chrome lens cap, mint case and the body is pretty mint too. It also has a mint Walz #1 close up adapter that someone is selling on Ebay for $90 (crazy money methinks) right now.

Sanders, you do nice work, I like the lighting in the nudes. What setup do you use for that? Also I'm already through the first roll, I dropped it off and will have it back tomorrow. It's an easy camera to load and advance the film with.

If it has a fresnel on one side and clear on the other side, it could be a Rolleigrid - an accessory fresnel lens for Rolleis.

That it is indeed - I googled it and it popped up immediately. I put it back in the camera. I'm surprised my repairman didn't know about it - he's worked on quite a few Rolleis in the last 40 years.

I have one more (of many I'm sure) question - how do you use the double exposure? I.e. how do you retention the shutter? The manual was a little vague on the procedure I thought.

Under the film advance lever you'll see a corrugated section on the flange. Move this forward and you can re-tension the shutter without advancing the film.
