How to "see"....

Having answered 911 lines in the past only to be asked “yeah buddy, you know if Walmart is open right now”, I’d say common sense is QUITE difficult to locate.

Could it just be the case that an available 911 number actually attracts those who lack any sense?
Those who are sensible, rarely have the need to call!

Should I compare all 911 operators to the operator I connected with at 2am weekday to report a non-occupied car on fire...from a pay phone telling them the road and intersection? Thankfully there was no lives in danger. And I certainly have messed up emergency calls (phone and radio) in my days. Dislike them both (phones and radios), to be honest.

I like someone's "seeing to compose". It is just about right, except factor in the question: If I use the art of photography to learn how to see and I am successful, would I still photograph? Would I put the camera down as a tool no longer needed? Perhaps. I am certainly enjoying seeing lately without a camera. I am not 'seeing to compose', of course, but observing with more intent perhaps, using skills, knowledge, and an appreciation of the light gained through making photographs. Coupled with an appreciation of watersheds through years of working with land restoration and wilderness work, as well as backpacking, and all that fine stuff.

"Seeing" brings all one's skills, experiences, knowledge, and emotions together. The opening of one's eyes is only the beginning. An upside down backward image is thrown across the retinas and firing off sensors; and on its way to our consciousness, it goes through a lot of manipulations and changes. We see what we want to see, or conditioned to see. Eye witness testimony in courts is not as strong as it seems it should be.

I really do wish I had the ability to see things through your eyes. It would make my life so much easier. Unfortunately after 15 years of doing this, I fully believe that the majority of the population COULDN'T survive on their own. The collective intelligence of society has deteriorated severely in just the short amount of time I've been doing this, based on my probably jaded and biased opinion.

However, your statement about "seeing" bringing all ones skills together resonates. The thing that I've enjoyed most over the last two years of sobriety has been those "light bulb" moments when the deeper meaning of things appears. Those moments of clarity where things become fully understandable on a level much much deeper than I've ever understood them before.

I understand why your work experience might give you a poor opinion of the rest of the world, but I am confident that it is not accurately representative.
I "prescribe" something that is not currently available - a night school or similar course on something to do with creativity. Preferably something you have never tried before, but are intrigued by. Something that you don't expect to start out being good at, but like.
In my experience, people who are interested in creativity are the most fun to be around.

About seeing, I have to say that most of my better photographs were when I didn't had the camera with me. And if I had it, there's a big chance I couldnt have done it anyway.

From certain point I just stopped looking for things and just let things come to me.
If something makes me stop and capt my attention I just try to work till exhaustion to find what it was, and many times I just can't do it. It is about describing what I saw in there.

I dont worry much about it anyway as Im fully conscient about how hard taking a good photograph is, and for me a good photograph is a statment of what you saw and felt. I think and agree with having a good photograph is rare and having a great one is a bless.
If i had to edit my whole disc and be brutally honest, my final collection would be very, very limited.

But I like to keep them all, because if you revisit your work times to times, you will realize again that there was something that you couldnt capture. Then if I have the chance to do it again I'll probably get closer to it.

There is a big difference between visual seeing and seeing to compose. I have not been very successful on the latter and better on the former.

I once dated a girl who told me she joined the chorus group at school. Unfortunately, her teacher told her she was a listener.

Explain how what you are seeing makes many visitors bread down in tears.
Explain the unexplainable.
