Heavy editing (analog or digital) on an image is...

  • ...required to bring out the hidden diamond; not doing it demonstrates inexcusable incompetence

  • ...OK if you think it helps

  • ...not a great idea; show some restraint

  • ...an abomination and you should be hanged, drawn and quartered for even suggesting it

And eventually someone comes along and tells them not to call themselves artists...an arterati has to call them one first.

But after raising triplet boys, I realize there is an 'innocence of youth', but the waters are still very muddied.

Yes, it's always bothered me that "Artist" was a some special title rather than just being a property available to pretty much any human. There is a kind of guild mentality among the arts elites that only Very Special People are allowed.

Is THAT nice???? Hmmm??? You're very hurtful.

If I were 50 years younger I'd be triggered and demand you be canceled. Instead, I can confirm that your question is held by pretty much everyone that knows me ...

Not intended to be rude or hurtful. Sorry if it came off that way. Mainly pointing out a great "suggestion" that was implied... introspection is a good thing, for all of us. Please don't be triggered and cancel me...

I'm chuckling as I read this. It wasn't rude and I didn't take it that way. I learned a long time ago that when engaged in debate, it's important to realize disagreement is not an assault on your person, your good looks, or your choice of underwear. It also pretty helpful to remain cheerful and have a sense of humor.

I think I am disqualified from any cable news show or national podcast ... not that they're asking ...

I have found the same attitude exists here, also, but then we are the elite, aren't we?! 😄

The definition of artist will always be as far out as the artists themselves.

The least the better. Perhaps that is why I loved shooting Kodachrome so much. Chrome prints were lovely too.
The emulsion set the standard. You either captured it or you did not.
And the slide did not lie.

This is how one does it! Do not alter the photograph...alter the landscape!

I especially like the way he got rid of the sea gulls messing up his skies photographing a series on nuke power plants in the early 80s -- the gulls just showed up as dang fuzzy black dots in the sky. He used an anti-gull filter...in this case a ND filter that slowed the exposure time down enough for the gulls not to show up. Creative editing!

Edit to add: Got me thinking...what image is more 'real'? Camera at the same spot on a busy city street, exposed one after the other. First image at 1/250th of a sec. and everything frozen in place. The second image, with the help of a heavy ND filter, is exposed at 30 minutes -- people and cars disappear into a blurr.

Life is simpler with slides.
