Hello Everybody
Well the title says it all.
I'm talking about the old wooden battleship gray flatbed ones.
Hope anyone can answer this.

This reminds me of the old joke about how much something costs. To modify the answer here:

If you have to ask, you can't lift it.

Oh why don't we say 10 lbs (sorry, don't know kilos) give or take 2 lbs (probably give, more than take).

That's not definitive but I'm just guessing 'cause my 8x10 camera weighs a little over 8 lbs, but it's not battleship gray.

I can take the camera to the post office again and see what it weighs without the case on Monday and will post back then.

B&J 8x10

Mine weights 18 pounds without any case, lenses, or film holders. Pat:D

I missed an auction last week for a B&J 8x10 with some holders and I think a lens by $5.00 off. Dang. I think the B&J 8x10 is what I'm looking for as it has front swings and is fairly affordable.

My B&J weighs at least 15lbs, and more likely the 18 stated above. It is a beast to get around, but it can make excellent negatives just like any cam that costs 10x more. Since I got my wehman, I have been pondering the idea of making it into an 8x10 enlarger- I then quickly realize that I have no handyman talents..

Mine weighs 28 pounds, but maybe that's with the lenses and both backs and the extra rail and everything. I have a cart to carry it around with, because I can't carry the outfit myself (I also have a very big very heavy wooden tripod to put it on that weighs about 20 pounds by itself).

Thanks for your answers!
I just corresponded with some one by email, who said his 8x10 B&J was weighing 12 lbs!
Are we talking about the same camera?
Or did they just weigh different depending on when they were made?
Best Regards

Mine is 14 lb minus lens, lensboard and extension rail.

Mine is about 15.5 pound including a small lens in a Alphax shutter but, i did strip the gray paint of :D (Not including the extension)

Mine is around 7 kilos with extention rail so there may be different ones on mine is all metall parts made with aluminium.
Maybe some older ones are made it with heavy metall and heavier wood to!

And the red bellows is very nice on mine!

Just found the Burke & James statemant about the weight its 17 lbs for the 8x10 from a 1967 brochure!
Its looks a tiny bit different then mine camera it has a stabiliser for the back which mine does not have on the picture.

Well you got it! It looks like a very nice camera, and a fair price. I hope the postage to Denmark isn't too expensive.

Good luck

Richard

Hi Mads

Thats a nice one but mine locks better with the red bellows! ;--)))
And I got mine cheaper, but if I ever come to Dänemark again we make a Burke & James meeting!
Or if you com to Switzerland its the same!
Mine is still in the Battleship grey, which is the right color for here!
Here you see a picture of my battleship:http://www.photo.net/photodb/user?user_id=418571

If weight is an issue, you should buy an Arca Swiss F-Line 8x10".
(Budget may be an issue, I have no idea what price for a B&J you are looking at...)

These are heavy cameras, but on the upside, they have big lensboards, if you have an interest in large portrait lenses and/or Packard shutters.

Well I don't mind that it's a bit heavy, I've had a toyo 810g (19lbs without lens) and compared to that camera everything is light and small!
The great thing about the B&J compared to the toyo is simply that it's easier to lug around at least for me.

Armin, nice camera, I like mine better though:wink:
And if you ever come to Denmark again, send a PM, it's always nice to meet up with other photogs.

Have fun everyone, I know I will:smile:

David I happen to like large portrait lenses, never used a packard shutter yet, but I plan to get one in the near future. Another great reason why I bought the camera:wink:

Ok so I got my camera. Mine weighs 6.8 kilos without lens, which is 17.6 lbs. My 300mm 1957 linhoff marked symmar weighs a kilos, luckily I'm a strong person!
I'll run some film through it, and tell y'all how it feels.
Best Regards
