How does digital back on an analog body know when to turn on?

For those with digital backs for Mamyia and Hass' analog bodies how does the back know to turn on when the shutter is tripped to take a picture?

The Mamiya AFD has the circuits built in to trigger the back to record. The Fuji 680 requires an interlock device to trigger everything at the right time. If I remember right there is a pc connector on the Phase One back for that, I dont know for sure but it might could plug in to the flash contact on a shutter and activate on firing.

Some older medium format SLRs have no means for the body to tell the back to 'wake up and shoot'...some rely on a dual (split) cable release. Much newer medium format SLRs have an electrical protocol that allows the body to coordinate with the back.

...except it's missing the bit about tuning in and dropping out. Now I'm wondering if Timothy Leary ever carried around a Leica. I know those folks in the Hog Farm were quite tech savvy with their bus and all the electronics.
