(I thought let's post this thread into the "Toy camera forum" but... no such forum?)

Finally did some B&W night photography with my low-tech Holga plus my hi-tech Nikon SB-800 on its hot-shoe, and the results didn't disappoint me:

SB-800 in A-mode, f/8
Fomapan 400
Rodinal 1+50 19 min. 20 C

Anyone tried a similar combination of old/cheap/toy camera with modern electronic flash, and if so, did it live up to expectations?

I've had good luck, although I haven't anything as fancy as your Nikon. Does your Holga fire the flash twice with each exposure? I have one that does that...

Mine does that and what I do is hold the shutter release down, then cover the flash with my hand, release (and the flash would go off but not as strong as the first time)

Yes indeed, the Holga fires the flash twice when taking a picture, with each movement of the shutter release: either way up or down.

It doesn't affect the picture though, because the shutter will be closed the second time. But it's a waste of battery life so what I do is I keep holding the shutter release down, switch the flash off, and let the shutter release come up again.
