I don't know which lab you used but you got ripped off. Being a professional, high-end lab owner myself, I can tell you that you should have received exactly what you requested and with no damage to the surface. Since paper doesn't come 30x40, it had to be cut from a roll. The right way to do this is to cut it bigger than what the final paper size would be, process it, then after dried and flattened, trim it down to the right size. Freshly cut edged can swell and give a tattered look, so doing a final trim at the end fixes that.
