hello to all. i just found out about this site today while browsing film photography resources on the internet.
i was very involved in black and white photography in my highschool. we had a great darkroom (for a highschool) with cool teachers and it was the most popular elective in the (huge) school. i was the president of photo club senior year, which doesn't sound like much, but there were about 500 or so students in the club. we went on a field trip to Nikon headquarters on Long Island and they showed us all of the digital cameras and told us that film was going to be basically obsolete in the next few years, and i got really upset by this.
i then went to college for something completely unrelated to photography, thinking it would be a 'practical move' or something like that. the thing that stunk was that you could only get into a darkroom at my school if you were a photo major/minor. and there were no darkrooms around to rent space out of. it was really annoying for me to not be able to have darkroom access or even be able to build my own, considering i lived in a dorm for the most part.
i graduated last year and during this winter, with a friend, decided to open up a community darkroom in Boston. we just had the opening party last week and we're going to start having regular hours of operation this week.
there are a lot of questions i'm going to be having about enlarger alignment and various thing, as there are a limited number of resources in my area and you guys seem to know a great many things.
wow, this got really long. oops!
thanks and talk to y'all soon!

Welcome, Andrea, from about an hour north and west of Beantown.

Good to hear of a community darkroom resource here in Boston. There is quite an active contingent in the New England area here on APUG. If you are planning events check out the regional section of the forums, and let us know about them. And of course, you are welcome to join us for any other planned gatherings.

And those Nikon guys.... pshawwwww...

Welcome from western PA, USA (and formerly MA). I wish you lots of success with your darkroom up there. If it has a website, let us know and there are people up there I'll tell about it. And try to meet up with the New England contingent of APUG - they're a great group.
