I did get to fondle one (M3 IIRC) in a shop a couple months ago and it felt great (not just the ergos, but also the smoothness of action, the quiet shutter, etc). It was what crystalized my desire to own one. The overhanging shutter speed dial is attractive because I've been spoiled by "command dials" on various film and digital cameras for the last 14-odd years, something I've missed with my return to film photography (and entirely via older cameras).

Chris

I have them all, almost…. The M5 is fantastic and its feature set is unmatched compared to any Leica M film camera outside an M7. But it feels very different and is not as smooth in wind on or shutter release. The shutter release is longer as it first needs to move the meter stem out of the way.
Fantastic camera , but not the same as the other Ms.

Also, rather than a M5 give a good look at the Minolta CLE. This is the further evolution of the Leica CL, takes M mount lenses, frame lines for 28mm, 40mm, and 90mm. I have the 90mm Minolta M mount f4. Tiny and very sharp. E stands for electronic, these are the next best thing to an M7 if you want aperture priority auto.
