This is my third post. I though I would take a moment to introduce myself and explain where I am going with photography.

I guess I could be labeled as a “big” landscape photographer. (I hate labels, and intend to violate this one in the next few months.) In the seventies I was influenced heavily by the work of Ansel Adams…which is odd because I have never shot B&W. (Another personal tradition I intend to violate soon.)

I worked with a 35mm SLR until about eight years ago. My last SLR was an old Nikon FM, heck of a camera.. you could pound nails with it. After seeing an exhibition of large format landscapes I stepped off the end of the pier and bought an used Cambo 4x5 view camera. However, I have spent the last few years with a digital SLR. –Did not accomplish much. The camera was smarter than I was… so I did not have to think about such trivialities as exposure, depth of field and color balance… So I am now back with the 4x5 Film Camera… It lets ME take the photograph.

I have a tendency to go my own way artistically. My focus to this point has been traditional landscape photography… but my technique seems to violate tradition.

Hello Christoper, welcome to APUG! I like landscape also. I was influenced by Ansel Adams myself. I hope you make a few more posts!

To hell with tradition then! Very over-rated! Personally I print all my best landscapes backwards. It sounds a bit non-traditional and odd, but it is a traditional odd since I make single transfer carbon prints and that is just what happens with the process. Looking forward to seeing some of your images!

Interesting.... I see all my compositions upside down on the ground glass....I use a 4x5 view camera...

Hi - where in "Western" Oregon are you? There's a bunch of people in Portland that you may be interested in meeting.

(I like to shoot 4x5 "big" landscapes too.)

Welcome!

I'm one of the bunch Kirk mentions. We'd welcome you to join us for discussions.

(I like to shoot 12x20 and 7x17 "big" landscapes too....)

fellow Oregon photographer here as well. I'm based out of Portland but I tend to get around the state and out to the coast often.

Welcome to the site!

Thanks for all the hellos..

I am down the I5 in Woodburn.... the hinterland of the hinterland..

Use to live in Tigard... took the bus for a couple of years into down town Portland and then across the river to work...I took a photoshop class once at the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts in Beaverton.... great school.. just really spendy.

I have always worked alone and am a bit of a hermit,,, but wouldn't mind meeting a group of people doing large format... Most of my efforts the next few months will be in landscape.. but I plan on widening my vision to other subjects.

Hi Christoper and welcome to APUG from another "Near" Portland Apuger. Maybe we will see you up here soon, there a couple of meeting with likeminded Hermits every month that may appeal to you.

Hello Christopher!

There will be a free weekend seminar on alternative photographic processes in September in Vancouver WA -- put on my an informal group of NW APUG photographers. here is a link to more info...

(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Might be interesting for you...especially now that you are working with a 4x5! I'll be doing a demo on carbon printing (that process which reverses the image!).

Vaughn

COOL. Way to make a hermit feel welcome.

JLP let me know when/where ya all meet in Portland.. I'll try to be there...

Vaughn, Carbon printing sounds interesting.. I will check out the seminar.

Thanks again.
Christopher.
