Last week I was in Milano, and by chance I ended up buying some film in Punto Foto, the guys that visited the campus last year, and had a long chat about Ferrania. Needless to day I'm very very eager for some updates now

I would love to just BUY the P30 and still get the reward film! Looks possible, now... YAY!

Well, well, well, well!

Of course B&W is a stepping stone prior to Colour film, but that was unexpected fantastic news!

P30 is classic italian Ferrania panchromatic film of about ISO 80.

I think this was the one used by the major italian movie directors like perhaps Fellini.

(If you haven't seen movies from the classic italian cinema, please do!!)

I saw the update. For the ones that have not clicked the link, FILM Ferrania is going to introduce a b&w film, "P30", this month!!

Now, i feel excited and dissapointed at the same time.

Excited because the packaging surely is one of the most beautiful film boxes ever designed. Whoever designed this, deserves an award. Really classic, it looks 2017 and 1960s at the same time.

Excited because finally the LRC is going to produce actual film ready to put into a camera.

Excited because the amici at FILM Ferrania are going to put more pictures made with P30 as the time passes by.

But i'm a bit dissapointed because I was expecting a color positive film. I know producing a good B&W emulsion is a pre-requisite to make sure a good color emulsion could be made. But at the same time this film will compete with Ilford FP4, Ilford Delta 100, Kodak 100TMX, Fuji Acros, Fomapan 100, Adox CHS II 100, Berger King Whooper 100... fantastic, excellent films already available. So I don't see how P30 could have lots of success outside Italy. Unless a smart marketing campaing convinces people, of course.

On the other hand the idea of reviving P30 is to revive back the 'classic' emulsion used by my most loved filmmakers, but at the same time the publicity says "ultrafine grain", which means it is not perhaps exactly the good old P30 but a new, state-of-the-art film. This is good for me (i like progress), but at the same time I can't help but it would hurt marketing if Ferrania wants to leverage the pedigree of the old P30.

As for the P30 sample pictures, they look in some cases fantastic (!), but at the same time in some of them the contrast is really high so, assuming the pictures weren't manipulated too much, it would mean that perhaps the real speed is even slower than ISO 80?
Mind you, i don't mind if the real speed is ISO 64 (a beautiful, magic number) or 50 or 32 (another number that makes people think of Panatomic-X).
In any case, i'd guess that the pictures posted are the pictures coming out from the first rolls of the new P30, and thus the people at the laboratory are still finding out what are the best development times that would give the best results in terms of contrast, speed, sharpness, acutance, etc. Of course i would guess they are testing with D76 and ID11, the industry standards... unless they want to release a new "Corradinal" or "Eziotol" developer!

I love the fact that the 'horses' people was used as background image on the website!

PS: Dave, they deleted the team pictures section on the website!! What happened?

If you start making and testing the color emulsions, what are you going to do with them? Let them spoil? No, you coat them as B&W products to recoup the cost of the silver. At least that is what I would do. And, if so, we thus know that one of the emulsions came from a real B&W product.

Is that a true B&W or C41?

However, I think I'll get some rolls of P30 and keep the original colour reward.

The video starts with "Behind every classic camera...", and you see some classic cameras. This includes my beloved Canon New F-1, so the video won me over!
However there is no Nikon F2 or Nikon F, which is strange because I think there is no more classic camera than that one, or the Leica III or the M3. It shows only the FM2 which can't mount Pre-AI lenses so really hardcore Nikon fans (like me) don't like it...

I'm so stupid... Everything was explained in the website and in the video.
On the website they indicated some pics will have higher contrast because they are still experimenting with development.

There is also a video where Nicola Baldini explains why they first are going to introduce P30 before color films. I feel satisfied. Even more satisfied when I see Nicola uses a Canon New F-1 to load the preproduction P30 roll!. If this guy has such a great taste in cameras, everything can go well.

Crazy silver content... original P30... I don't think I buy all of the marketing hype, but I'm very glad the project is progressing, and I condone some little bit of dolus bonus

Well, that's what Ferrania says about the film, they are biased (pun intended).
