There are some bad news.
Very intense rains in Piedmont and Liguria have flooded several places.
The Ligurian province of Savona was also involved. The town of Cairo Montenotte is reported to be flooded by the Bormida river.
As you well know, Ferrania is a suburb in the municipality of Cairo Montenotte.
So far no missing person is reported in the entire province of Savona, which is the "good news".

Yet, I am more than a bit worried about the state of the factory. Ferrania is about 6 km away, as the crow flies, from Cairo Montenotte downtown.

Im sure we will get an update from Dave, fingers crossed the factory is OK.

If the area has a history of flooding i think we would know by now if the ferrania plant has been affected in the past...

Note that Vision is ECN-2 process, not C41 process, and that is a lower contrast material.

I would guess that Ektar is different as well due to requirements for higher sharpness compared to Portra, perhaps it has some sort of measures to achieve greater sharpness.

As for Portra, that's the greatest thing that has happened to C41 photography since the Kodak VR film (first T-grain neg consumer film if i recall correctly.)
It was...I remember using VR 1000 when I started taking photographs in 1982.

Interesting find.
Whois claims the registration was created in November 2014, not long after the Kickstarter campaign started. (The filmferannia website was registered in 2009).

Thats really weird!

It seems that these guys wanted to buy or acquire rights to a domain and commercial name to resell it to Film Ferrania in the future.
The question which arises is if, during the bankruptcy proceeding of Ferrania, the name and trademarks have been sold to this guys.

If they were, the Ferrania brands are in jeopardy.
If they weren't, action should be undertaken against these people.

This sort of thing happens all the time. People register a domain name, planning to re-sell it at a profit to someone who will actually want to use it.

In this part of the world, there is nothing to prevent anyone from doing that.

It is wrong in law to use a website to misrepresent oneself though, so the owner of that domain would get into trouble (here) if they started to sell film with a similar brand name.

Yes the domain name trick is common also here, someone registers the domain name similar to a famous one, then they put a page saying "this domain name is on sale". This is common.

But in this case the person registered a commercial name, and then in addition apparently or supposedly stole the trademark for that business and put the stolen trademark on the website, which is something I never saw.
By driving traffic to a name with an apparently legitimate affiliation to Ferrania he is inducing people in believing that his is actually Ferrania'a web site, thus certainly damaging Ferrania's business.
Unless, that is, he has some legitimate claim to the trademark.

Who are these guys?

http://ferrania.it/

They don't just use the name, which might be legal, but the entire brand. I suggest Film Ferrania looks into this.

According to Nicola Baldini:
"Long story. Ferrania Technologies sold the ink jet business unit - before we arrived - to an Italian company that basically acquired the old stock of paper."

Evidently, Ferrania Technologies is pursuing litigation. Unfortunately, Italy does not have the same "cyber-squatting" laws as the US...

Direct from Nicola:
"Yes really big problems during past days. The LRF is on a little hill and the water did not arrive. In any case we lost one day of work moving things from the basement just in case."

He didn't say if it happened in the past. He is probably unsure. But it seems safe to say that this is not the first time the Bormida has flooded...

Well thats good news indeed that the LRF is safe! Look forward to the next update.

Hi Dave,

Is there any news? There has been no update since some weeks, i think!!

Hi Dave,

Is there any news? There has been no update since some weeks, i think!!

Well, a couple weeks. And more or less left to christmas
I guess that a stage of testing and sensitising will be finished in these 2-3 weeks, taking into account the effect of the Christmas rest on materials and production.

I've just returned from Italy!

The next update (tomorrow?) will be a personal account of my visit. What I saw, who I met, and what happened while I was there...

I will also address the lack of updates that have happened from time to time over the last couple of years.

Wohoo! I feel guilty for being rather close and not visiting the country properly. Maybe when factory tours are offered...

Will be awaiting the update. Hopefully everything is going well at Ferrania, and the Christmas halt doesn't leave things in the air for long.

Hey, Dave,

I know you're all pretty busy... but it has been a week since you said you'd be sharing an update "tomorrow" Got any scraps of news to throw to us?

Cheers!
Dave

I'm really having a hard time writing this update... My experience was overwhelming on many levels. Also, no one, including me, would have read my first draft... It's coming, I promise.
