I have a Hasselblad 503CX, and the Hasselblad handle mount flash (I think made by Metz) - I very rarely use the flash, but I was using it recently and discovered that the sync cable has the black insulation peeling away from the wires inside. This cable has a circular multi conductor connector at each end, and splits to a Y with a PC connector at one end, I plug the PC connector into the lens, one circular connector into the camera body, and the other circular connector into the flash head. I get good, repeatable exposures with this setup and I would like to keep it around for a few more decades .

Questions: Should I be worried about the insulation degradation on the cable?
Are these cables still sold? and if so, what are they called?

back in the day

Back in the olde days -- the 1960s and 1970s -- I wold venture out into the world every day with a Rolleiflex and a Heiland flash as a news photographer. In those days a sync cord cost three bucks and they always failed sooner or later. You had to have a spare or two just in case. The sync cord was the weakest part of the chain of equipment. Toward the end of the era they started making heavy duty sync cords that cost nine bucks but would hold up much better. I don't know the quality of your sync cord but I would suggest you think about getting a spare, just in case.

I was recently in the market for a TTL flash for Hasselblad and was surprised at the frequency of this very problem of degeneration of the cord covering. I thought about Plastidip as well as electric tape, but getting a spare may involve buying a new flash. Does anyone know specifically where to get a spare?

I recently picked up a S/H Hasselblad CF/H lens converter. The cord, in original packing, which connects from the adaptor to the lens pc socket is brand marked Paramount. Obviously different connectors but they are the go to I would say.

I think you have the Metz for Hasselblad 4504 ProFlash your part is listed as a Hasselblad TTL cord.

If so this is relevant: http://photo.net/medium-format-photography-forum/00ctWS

Thanks Chris - yes, that is exactly the cable that I am looking for, but I don't see it at Paramount.... I'm writing them to see if they do have it hidden somewhere....

One possible source is B&H. I recently ordered two, different flash cords from there for my old Vivitar and Sun-Pak electronic flashes and I honestly believe they are both better than the ones that I bought with the units new. These new ones seem to be "factory fresh". Probably made by Paramount. B&H's web site lists the different cords and probably have some, if not most, for Hasselblad. And if they do, buy two, even if they are a little expensive. Ultimately, you will not regret that purchase. Flash cords always fail when you need them most...Regards

TLT syc. cord

Do they? Can you find the Hasselblad TTL connection?
Miss read your needs in snyc. cords, Paramont makes many kinds but do not know if your type is offered, that is something you have to find out.

If it is Hasselblad specific I have no doubt the cord could be sent in for Paramount to re-wire.
We aren't starting from scratch.

Yes the one connector was Hasselblads. The plug itself MAY be available from an electronics part warehouse. If they are you could have a couple made up
