Has my Rodinal gone bad?

I ran a test from 1898 to 2008. New Rodinal was decanted from white plastic to brown glass bottle as new. I did a test strip exposed under studio lights for uniformity every six months. Strips were identical for ten years when they started to lighten slightly.

Part of the confusion here is that R09 was the formula number for Rodinal, what is often sold as R09 & now APH09 is the pre WWII version of Rodinal, this doesn't keep as well as modern Rodinal which was re-formulated when Agfa merged with Gevaert in the mid 1960's.

Adox Rodinal/adonal is still the same as the old Agfa Rodinal and is still made by former Agfa employees. Because of issues in the US where J&C had registered the Rodinal brand name it had to be dropped, so Rodinal was being sold under various names inc R09 One shot. Luckily Fotoimpex/Adox have managed to acquire the brand name and re-use it.

One problem now is some companies are making substitute versions of RO9 that don't use either the pre-WWII formula used by Orwo/Calbe or Agfa Gevaert. The consequence is it's now extremely confusing, the best solution is to use the Adox Rodinal and know it's the genuine product.

I would suggest you do use it again, but with a test film. Otherwise I don't think you'll ever know.

I recently tested my heavily crystallized R09 one shot, after thinking it might have lost its effectiveness, based on a previous roll I had developed with it. It actually seems to work absolutely fine. I most probably made some mistake with that roll, which I need to diagnose, so I won´t repeat. I am writing this just to add to what many others seem to have experienced as well: crystallization, even heavy one, does not seem to be indication of bad developer for Rodinal/R09 one shot.

R09 goes bad very quickly. It is not the Rodinal that we all know.

A couple of weeks ago I used the last drop from bottle opened 3 years ago. It worked as new.
