Simon, you seem a tad more at ease than you were 9 years ago.

I will have a drink on your behalf!

Cheers!

By my time it was AW Young, Harringey Photographic Supplies, Marston & Heard, and yes HP3 was sort of gritty but so was Tri-X, HP4 was an improvement but HP5 was very much better.

My father used Selochrome.

Ian

Just as a matter of interest Ian, where about was Harringey Photographic Supplies based. Have lived in the area for over 20 years and don't remember them!

I spelt it wrong it was Harringay Photographic Supplies, 435 Green Lane, London. N4, it's were William Hill's are now. I think Roy from RK's father was a partner and that Martin Reed worked there. Marston & Heard were at 378 Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, N4. AW Young were at 159 Chatsworth Road, Clapham. There were a couple of smaller places in London selling ex-Government stock. There's some details here

I can't remember when they closed I know the last time I visited them was around 1976/7 when I was buying an LF camera and 5x4 enlarger. They were amazing stores full of things you never see today.

Dear Karl-Gustav,

I would have loved some 'Semla' I admit I had to resort to Google.... looks very nice ! and since our anniversary was the day after Shrove Tuesday timing would have been spot-on.

I have to say I have had some business fantastic trips around Scandinavia...winter, spring and summer but never had, or been offered a 'Semla'

Kind Regards

Simon. ILFORD Photo / HARMAN technology Limited.
Dear Simon.
If you ever will have a trip to Göteborg ( Gothenburg ) Sweden between Christmas and Easter , please send me a message and I will treat you with one. The orthodox semla-maniacs only eat them on Shrove Tuesday but the Swedish confectioner's have found out that Selling semlas is an improvement for the cash flow so semlas are normally available from just after Christmas until Easter. Being orthodox under those circumstances is a tuff job so failures happen frequently.
Welcome !

Karl-Gustaf

Thanks for the info Ian and for the link. I lived round the corner from there in the late 80s and am still quite local, but it must have shut down before then as I would have remembered such a place, though I read it changed to Photec and was still there in 1982. Will have to ask Martin about the place.

Intrigued to learn from your link that a flat in the building belonging to the shop was the base for soft porn film production by one George Harrison Marks in the early 60s. And before porn, his speciality was photographing cats. (Fill in your own punch line.) A man before his time as it sounds like with such subjects he was made for the internet. A documentary film waiting to be made!

If it weren't for Harman Technology Ltd. I would have dismantled and sold off my darkroom 10 years ago. Then found something else for my disposable income. (Not digital photography.)

But amazingly that ended up not being necessary. Who knew?

So sincere thanks offered to you all. Hearty congratulations. And best wishes going forward.

Ken

Warm congratulations from the west side of the pond on your 10th anniversary! For panchromatic B&W film, HP5+ is my go-to B&W film!

I want to add my congratulations on your anniversary and thank you for providing us with excellent products.

I also would like to congratulate Harmon, as well as thank them, for doing what many thought was impossible, keeping a traditional photographic film and paper factory and business going.

In my own small way I may have contributed to the 2014 sales increase as I made a (for me) massive order of Ilford 4x5" film in FP4+ and FP5+ as well as a substantial paper order. I believe this wouldn't have been possible if Harmon, in reality the group of people who bought the company, and, probably taking huge personal financial risks, hadn't done what they did.

I am truly grateful.

Mick.

I also would like to congratulate Harmon

Dear Mick
It's HarmAn. Harmon is something completely different.

Ricardo, oh dear, what a mistake. I should have gotten that correct, especially as I sit here with a couple of paper boxes of prints sitting right alongside me with the words, "ILFORD HARMAN technology" written on them.

Mick.

Their shop was an Aladdin's cave of rare papers and developers. It was one the places for "serious" photographers in the 70s and early 80s, you never knew who or what you'd find in there.

We had a store like this in The Hague (The Netherlands) called Van Puffelen. They even had all sorts of stuff for alt-photo processes. And lots of books. They closed shop in 2008 due to the rise of digital photography. It existed for 83 years and it was the third generation family owned. I bought a lot of photographic paper when they closed. All kinds of sorts I never heard of and still have some of it.

I must have passed thousands of times by that door in the last 10 years or so and never knew what had been before.
It is now a fruit and veg shop.

In the area, when I moved in, there were 2 camera shops and an independent lab, a Snappy Snaps and some chemists.
Today the 2 camera shops have closed. Both owners have retired as far as I know.

Congratulations, and many more!
