I have some negs taken around 1960 by my late Father which, according to his notes, were on HP3 film from "Frank Young", who seemed to be one of the main suppliers of ex-govt stuff (the perfs and edge markings look rather like movie film). They're actually quite good in their way, with a sort of gritty "photo-journalist look" (can't think of any other way to describe it, though my Dad was so far NOT like a photo-journalist character!). Perhaps somewhat reminiscent of the old Eastern European "Orwo" look, rather grey and depressing.

Happy Birthday and THANK YOU! I started using Ilford papers not too long before Kodak stopped making theirs and was very apprehensive when the receivership happened. I was slightly surprised but very happy when Harman emerged saying it was dedicated to silver-based products. I've been very happy to keep using it since.

Just rechecked....the negs which I was thinking of, were on HP3 film from A.W. Young, I think that my memory was mixing the name with Frank Martin. In with my Dad's slides there is also a set of Kodachrome duplicates from Marston & Heard of "Views of London". By the "GVIR" logos visible on the Guardsmen's boxes at Buckingham Palace, these must be pre-1953, but still look clear and unfaded. (Sorry, getting very O.T.)

I can just remember HP3 roll film....can recall my Dad giving me a roll of 120 size HP3 when I'd had some poor results trying to process cheapy Woolworths(?) film. He said something like "try this, you won't go far wrong".....and he was right.

My personal favorite: Ilford FP4+ (@ 100 ISO) developed in homebrew Caffenol-C-M.
Excellent combination. So yes: I'm very happy that Ilford is still around with good and affordable film (and paper and developer and ...)

Many thanks for making it possible for us to enjoy our hobby/passion. My fridge is full of HP5+ in 35, 120, and 4x5, and down in my darkroom is the supply of MG FB Classic and Ilfoprint developer. Actually the only non-Ilford products I seem to use are pyro developers and TF-4 fixer!

The best thing about carrot cake is it doesn't taste of carrot. Well done to Ilford, it shows what can be done if competent management believe in a product. HP5+ has become my default 400 ASA B&W recently.

Yes, and a big "job well done" to you all. I like all the Ilford/Harman films and papers, but do use other products too. That said, I'd be darn happy if I only had Ilford or it was all I could get. I also appreciate a company that listens to its customer base. Hats off! John W

Dear Karl-Gustav,

I would have loved some 'Semla' I admit I had to resort to Google.... looks very nice ! and since our anniversary was the day after Shrove Tuesday timing would have been spot-on.

I have to say I have had some business fantastic trips around Scandinavia...winter, spring and summer but never had, or been offered a 'Semla'
