By my time it was AW Young, Harringey Photographic Supplies, Marston & Heard, and yes HP3 was sort of gritty but so was Tri-X, HP4 was an improvement but HP5 was very much better.
My father used Selochrome.

Just as a matter of interest Ian, where about was Harringey Photographic Supplies based. Have lived in the area for over 20 years and don't remember them!
Dear Simon.Dear Karl-Gustav,
I would have loved some 'Semla' I admit I had to resort to Google.... looks very nice ! and since our anniversary was the day after Shrove Tuesday timing would have been spot-on.
I have to say I have had some business fantastic trips around Scandinavia...winter, spring and summer but never had, or been offered a 'Semla'
Kind Regards
Simon. ILFORD Photo / HARMAN technology Limited.
I spelt it wrong it was Harringay Photographic Supplies, 435 Green Lane, London. N4, it's were William Hill's are now. I think Roy from RK's father was a partner and that Martin Reed worked there. Marston & Heard were at 378 Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, N4. AW Young were at 159 Chatsworth Road, Clapham. There were a couple of smaller places in London selling ex-Government stock. There's some details here
I can't remember when they closed I know the last time I visited them was around 1976/7 when I was buying an LF camera and 5x4 enlarger. They were amazing stores full of things you never see today.
Ian
I LOVE HP5+. And Ilford. And carrot cake.
I also would like to congratulate Harmon
Dear Mick
It's HarmAn. Harmon is something completely different.
Their shop was an Aladdin's cave of rare papers and developers. It was one the places for "serious" photographers in the 70s and early 80s, you never knew who or what you'd find in there.Marston & Heard were at 378 Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, N4.
