Whether AgX is right or wrong in his belief about the extent or lack of it in hiring new "young blood" in the vital areas he mentions, I feel that his mentioning this on Photrio is unlikely to have much of a counter-productive effect on film's future. We overate our influence here on Photrio by a lot. I would not worry about it.

On the other hand macfred's desire in #48 if expressed in such a way that there was a hint that it was more than just a hope and that serious consideration is being given by the film makers to rolling film in the way he would like it to be, then all he has to do is plant the idea on Uncle Zuck's site and he alone may save the industry :D

Please let us discuss that further via PM (I did not brake that contact), because your accusations in their generality are not fair, and I can give proof.
But, let us assume that change has taken place within the last two years or so. And further that all these academic engineers and chemists are working on halide products.
That still means that for many, many years the industry was not willing to look ahead, ignoring the coming bottleneck. And that basically it still is an "old" industry without a grown age structure.

That is wrong. And very arrogant. You really have no insight in what has all happened in the factories during the years.
The industry has looked ahead! The industry has invested in 'scaling-down' technology, human resources, even some new products. That is why Eastman Kodak, Fujifilm, Harman technology and Foma have kept their lines running, despite the fact that - depending on the product - the market has collapsed to 1% to 5% from the top to the point of lowest demand.
And that is why a very small player like our company has managed to increase the product portfolio year by year. Despite huge market challenges.

I proposed to take this further off-public.
And to discuss possible bilateral misunderstandings or misconceptions.

Yes, I just got that PM from Adox. But instead of starting the above discussion, it only contained allegations against me up to the most absurd one, namely doing kind of conspiracy against Adox.

It ended in calling me name as never ever someone dared before.

I have a different understanding of company communications.

That all is very, very sad.

Indeed, it is.
Beside the wrong statement above, we have offered you the chance for a detailed communication with giving evidence for your statements. But you have refused that. No evidence at all from you.
That are the facts.

You mean improvements to film has not stopped after 2008-ish?

Several new and / or improved silver-halide photo products have been introduced since then. For example:
Fujifilm:
- Provia 400X in 2007/08
- new RA-4 papers for photo books
- new instax BW film
- new "Maxima" RA-4 paper for fine-art prints, with colour stability of more than 100 years (last year at Photokina)
- Acros II (coming soon)

Kodak:
- improved Portras in 2010
- new RA-4 papers
- Ektachrome E100

Harman technology / Ilford Photo:
- new BW papers some years ago
- and we have to wait until the 24th of October for the next announcements (if the leak is correct improved Multigrade V paper will be introduced).

ADOX:
- Speed Boost technology
- Polywarmtone II (beginning of next year)
- improved photo chemistry, like the new CAPTURA technology.

Foma:
- improved R100.

Impossible project / Polaroid originals:
- ongoing improvements of their films from generation to generation

InovisCoat:
- new products which they have designed and are producing as OEM manufacturer for several different other companies.

Best regards,
Henning

I was referring to academic engineers and chemists. Not younger staff in general.

As written above, in four of the five (in total) film manufacturers I have visited I talked to young researchers, chemists and engineers. All had academic levels of education and academic degrees from the universities where they have studied. Including all younger ones.
What you have said here concerning this topic is simply wrong. And it is clearly indicating that you have neither talked to these experts, nor have seen one of the factories from the inside.

Best regards,
Henning

The many videos and photos showing Harman, Ferrania, Kodak and Foma Bohemia reveal no young workers.

When we had the Ilford factory tour in 2013, they made a pilot test coating run on their small pilot coating machine. A really outstanding demonstration! I was only 50cm away from the coating head: An experience I will never forget, amazing!
And who did this demonstration for us? A young emulsion engineer. And at that time we discussed also the topic of hiring new, younger experts. And Simon Galley - our tour guide - said that Harman technology of course is aware of the necessity to educate new, younger staff. And that they are active in this area.
Last year at Photokina I talked to two Ilford employees. Both younger and working for Ilford for 1 and 4 years.
That in the video the focus is on some employees working there for a very long time is clear and simply very good marketing: Of course long-year experience and loyalty to your company is "selling" very good and a very nice message (potential) customers like to hear. I would have done the same .

Henning

Just out of curiosity, what was the method used for inviting people to apply for the tour? I don't recall seeing anything on APUG about this visit?
Thanks
pentaxuser

It was announced for the public (via website and/or newsletter, I don't remember such unimportant details , but I think it was also a topic here on apug). In autumn 2013 they did their last public tours. The tours were on different days over a time span of several weeks. I enjoyed my tour very much. Simon Galley was a perfect tour guide!

Best regards,
Henning
