Got mine here in eastern PA this AM. Quite a spectacular effort. Don't know if I should confess this but what the hey -- I guess it's related to some of my past professional history as a mechanical/electrical tinkerer, but the image that really stopped me in my tracks was the shot of the printing press(?) in Robert Hall's ad -- love it!

Seems like delivery to Europe is pretty fast. Mine arrived yesterday and I did not go into detail, but it looks like there are some very interesting articles which have to wait until weekend .

The work of Dorothy Hooper Bloomfield and of Allen Friday is inspiring, and some very useful articles too - I think Emulsion complements the other analogue mags out there, definitely doing it's own thing - very well worth the subscription!
(despite my nit-picking about the type on the other thread, I must say that it looks very good - The photos are well produced and I'm even getting used to the typeface )

I can't edit my last post, but of course I meant 'Diana' Hooper Bloomfield and not 'Dorothy' Hooper Bloomfied. I think when I was typing it I got my wires crossed with Dorothy Blum Cooper ! Sorry Diana

Got mine and thumbed through it. Not impressed with Cooper's photography, just not up my alley, but the rest of the mag seems to suit me quite well.

Anyway, I might as well say what impressed me about her work (Hooper Bloomfied's) - it is not literal but expressive and interpretive (done with a pin-hole camera). She herself makes the link with writing and sees photography as a kind of 'story telling'.

Ansel Adams it ain't.

The original prints, platinum/palladium and then cyanotype, must look stunning. Googled her name and found her website also containing interesting work, some the same images but they do look a bit different on the web. She's obviously a well recognised and established photographer. I was pleased to be introduced to her work, I find her way of seeing refreshing.

Having seen the original prints of Diana's that were published in Emulsion #2 I can tell you that the reproductions pale by comparison.

Generally I've found the repros in Emulsion #1 and #2 to be quite disappointing. Hopefully it will get better in time.

Don,

I would be interested in hearing why you think the reproductions are disappointing? You are the first to make this statement about reproduction quality, the magazine is being printed by one of the best in the country who mainly does fine art printing for many of the top photographers in the country as well as many large corporations and such.

I have found that most magazine reproductions are not the same quality as the real print, as offset presses have some limitations still and they don't print at the quality that a lithograph and such would be. But would be interested in your feedback and why you think the printing is not up to standard?

Please feel free to email me with your observations and such, anything that can be done to improve would be helpful.
