I'm not sure about that article, I'd be more tempted to check out Zakia/Lorenz/White New Zone System Manual, because Zakia writes clearly and accurately.

But while I might say that most Zone System write-ups contain errors... Most of the errors cancel each other out, are minor, and in the end turn into reasonable procedures to follow.

On order...

Regards,
Rob

I should have clarified... I haven't read it yet but I trust the author.
I ordered a copy too, so I will be able to critique it fairly.

OK I got The New Zone System Manual.

It stinks. Sorry about the bum steer.

Actually a very chaotic read, almost like this thread.

I agree with c) and d).

I believe I understand the Zone System rather well and you aren't getting what you think you're getting. To start, the target values are wrong and flare doesn't seem to play a factor.

The current ISO does have a safety factor. C.N. Nelson's Safety Factors in Camera Exposure is authoritative. It is the paper that lead to the 1960 standard (along with Simple Methods of Approximating Fractional Gradient Speeds). All available HERE.

Mark, because of Zone System testing methods, the results are different than the rhetoric would suggest. Think pre-1960 speeds with the one stop safety factor.

Well when I meter a zone 1 close in for a contra jour scene I need to allow for more flare if I'm using an un coated lens than a multi coated lens. Because zone 1 on the print is detail above flare base density and fog.

Sorry, should have said in Zone System testing flare doesn't seem to play a factor.
