From Digital To Film

Hello, APUG.

I purchased my first digital SLR in January of 2007. Initially, I just wanted to capture better pictures of my son (14 months old at the time). It was immediately a slippery slope for me and I've learned a lot along the way.

But I started to feel as if something was missing in my images. After comparing images of other photographers captured on film with my digital captures, I finally figured out what was missing. Soul. Character. So as of February 2012, I have decided to travel the 35mm film route. From this point forward, my dSLR will be reserved for times when I am working with strobes. Otherwise, it's 35mm black & white film from here on out. And, yes. I will be developing my own film. =)

Lookin' forward to learning as much as I possibly can from the members of APUG with regard to shooting with film.

I've been lurking for the past few weeks. Immediately, I noticed the signal-to-noise ratio is much better here compared to the Fred Miranda forum. I won't even bother comparing against DPReview's forum. Perhaps film folks also have more character and soul than the digital guys. =P

I find there to be a higher intellectual level here. A lot more thinking before speaking, and by golly folks actually know things about photography here that don't involve a little green box.

Haha! I was also getting sick of the Canon-Nikon war. It seems folks at the other forums obsess more over gear than actual photography.

I don't do my own developing yet, so I'd have to say it's the sheer beauty of a projected slide.

Oh yes, projected slides are a very potent gateway drug, all the more enjoyable because of the crowdgasms they can induce.

Before you buy anything, and don't listen to everyone's personal favourite camera crap, find your local APUGists in California, visit them for real advice and a few beers and go to all the SH outlets you can find so you can try lots of cameras and make up your own mind

Welcome to the dark side.

You can use strobes just fine with 35mm film, you know. But better yet, if you're hooked on the soul and character of film, you need to try medium format. It's not harder, in some ways easier, and "can" (doesn't always, but that's a different story) blow 35mm quality out of the water. Depending on your subjects, then there's large format, great for landscapes, still lifes and posed deliberate portraits, not so good for subjects that might go away in the next 10 minutes or are moving.

I shoot all three depending on subject, mood, available time etc.
