your second image seems far less erotic than several of the images in the article that Art posted from jpg magazine. I don't really see the issue with your image. The gal with the star in the studio shot doesn't do anything for me but I don't see how it is very offensive.

Hey Don,

My avatar image (of me!) was deemed inappropriate on a very popular glamour model website - because it was an image of a minor! I even filed an appeal through their 'appeals' process and told the image was of me and I give them all the permission in the world, now as an adult. They told me I need the copyright holder's permission too (my Mom). No win. I thought that was pretty funny. This is what happens when rules are applied without much thought.

Regards, Art.

Don's photos look "arty" enough to me. I recently worked with a friend who basically does fetish/nude/erotica photography and somehow I got roped into taking lots of digital shots of this for him. I got 3 shots on film out of the whole 3hour deal. Not going to work with someone else like that again, I think... Plus I find the erotica stuff makes me uncomfortable. I don't have an issue with porn as long as I'm not interacting with it in real time, in the flesh. I decided that although that shoot means I've technically got the 2 models requirement for MM, I just won't join because I don't want to attract those types of people.

Since the majority of people in this group are male, I'm guessing you've not had the problem I've had with slightly dodgy looking 'new' male models flinging themselves at your feet on these modelling websites. It's nearly enough to put me off. I had vaguely considered using male models before but now the thought makes me a little uncomfortable. I would really only consider someone who seemed professional with a decent portfolio and that I'd pay. The freebie offers have not been good...

Have any of you ever heard of pose books? My friend showed me two he bought when he was in South Korea. It's just masses of different poses for models (clothed) and all the little tiny variations. I'm now kicking myself I didn't borrow one of the two because I've googled and can't find anything similar except for a few overpriced CD-based ones. I have very little ideas for poses and I think it would help me inspire me.

I don't have the problem you have with male models - I get a lot who when I approach them on Model Mayhem, even with my portfolio, say, "no nudes" or even more offensive, "I don't do gay stuff". I'm rarely asking anyone to pose with another male, and even if I am, I'm certainly not asking them to get romantic together.

I remember pose books - they used to be all the rage before the internet - there were always ads for them in the back of Shutterbug magazine. Look around on ebay or on Amazon.co.uk for used ones - they should be pretty cheap.

Not sure I like all the pictures on the blog, Art, but I liked some of the projects on hakanphotography's website.

Hi. I must admit, I done only one full nude session, and not sucsessfully, and some seminude, with more sucsess. Thing is, here, like in Ari's case, is almost impossibile to get models for nude photography. As opractice make master, that is big problem.

I allways liked Eastern European photography, no matter of subject. Sometimes graphic, sometimes shocking, sometimes beautifull, and often almost documentary. There was also fact that some of Eastern Europe countries untill recent past didn't have laws of humans rights protection at all, or very few laws, so artists were is position to make things (in some of countries) which on West could be seen as exploitative or would be illegal. I think it is shame we don't know much more about EE photographers.

Hey! What happened to Sanders' Brownie nude that was just in the gallery and now is gone? Was that censorship? What was wrong with it? The fact that it was a Catholic woman? With rather luscious breasts.

Akki14

dpurdy - I think Sanders doesn't always like to post his stuff in APUG Gallery. If you want to keep an eye on his work, he has a flickr account but the images are always posted as 'moderate' so you have to have a flickr account to view the pictures... to approve that you can view these sorts of things.

dpurdy

Yes I know Sanders' work but I was asking why the image was posted in the gallery for awhile and then disappeared. I am curious if it was censored and pulled out by whomever is moderating the gallery.

So - I've been lurking here for a few weeks and thought I should contribute something. Worked with very experienced figure model lately and thought some of you might be interested in a cyanotype over platinum image.

dpurdy, I suggest you PM Sanders if you really want to know. Many APUGers pull images themselves. Anyway I don't think there's any conspiracy here.

How many people would participate in a fine art nude print exchange? The rules would be similar to the blind print exchange, except this would NOT be blind and you would know your recipient ahead of time. Also the person you send your print to is not the person who sends you a print.

Dan Dozer

Thanks for the possitive comment Art. It was a real pleasure working with a model who does this for a living and is very good at what she does.

I'm up for a print exchange.

So I thought it was time I contributed to this group some as well. I haven't been doing nudes for very long, and I'm learning this new game with great interest. I was shocked at how difficult it is to basically have noting left but light to play with. But it's refreshing and rewarding too, as I believe when the ante is upped a notch will help bring the level of photography up as well.
Anyway, I hope to get some feedback from the talented group here.

What are some ways for a beginner in people photography in general to get started on the path to fine art nudes. Working with people in general is difficult for me (much less finding models). I don't plan on doing nudes any time soon but I want to at some point have the skill level to be able to take a person and show someone their identity without having to resort to style of clothing and other mostly irrelevant details.

Hey monkey, can I call you that? Hehehe .... Seriously, what's your real name? Take a basic portrait course first. You need to be comfortable and confident around people when taking their portraits - even more so when taking nude portraits. Then learn some lighting skills. Understand how light and light modifiers will help you get the images you want. When learning about light, try this excercise: shoot 10 rolls of a person like object in the same room. Use your imagination and understanding of your camera and light.

monkeykoder

Oddly enough I'm quite frequently known as monkey in real life but those that don't call me that call me Dustin... I plan on taking some portrait classes when I can afford them I plan on lighting being the first thing I work on. Are there any other techniques in particular that would be valuable that I could practice without a model on hand?
