Hopefully film and its associated products will be around for many years but here's an interesting thought: if all but one film was discontinued but there was still a big selection of developers, or if only one developer existed but still a wide choice of film available, which situation would you prefer.

So lets say only one medium speed film is available but lots of different developers can be chosen to get different results OR any film can be bought but only one developer (all-rounder) is available to use on all these films.

Basically, which do you value the most, having a choice of film or choice of developers?

Peter

p.s. forget about mixing your own soup as that is not allowed.

Man Thats a Hard one.
How about coating my ovn film
My current situation is one dev and lots of different film and I would like to try some them in other developers.
I think my answer is my current situation.

HC 110 :D

Sorry that's not allowed either.

Why didn't you say so in the first place ? Do you know how much I just spend on a filmcoating line

Consider yourself thrown out! You are now hunted game! We are leaving for Næstved now...with guns (and nuns:D)!

You better watch out, I have a fireengine loaded with Holy rod ready to wash you down :D

I will gladly let my (rather huge) body wash down with Holy Rod!

And with this comment I celebrate my post no. 1700.

My option would be a lot of films with one developer: XTOL

Many films one developer. I tried DD-X, its ok, but I've found rodinal to be easier to use, so my one dev would be the white bottle in the red box!

Scaring. Until now we all agree, what's wrong ?
I was about to start a thread about developer differences.
I wondered how e.g. Ilfosol S, Ilfotec LC29 and microdoll X differs just to name a few.

Why???

It is so easy...There is Rodinal and there is Rodinal...anything else is not important :D

"I`ll take the lots of film. I can mix any kind of developer I need"

Sorry Ronald but I said mixing your own soup was not permitted. Does this affect your answer?

"Scaring. Until now we all agree, what's wrong ?"

Actually Soeren I am going to throw a spanner in the works as I would prefer one film with a good choice of different developers. The film could be pushed or pulled and so many different results could be got by using different developers.

Peter

Developers can affect the look of a picture but they can't make one film look like a different film or radically change the film speed. So I would take many films and one developer.

Moving your hypothetical question to a more realistic scenario where such situations would be forced upon us by manufacturers -- it's easier to mix your own developer than it is to coat your own film.

If mixing my own developer is not permitted, can I at least add a pinch of Metol to an existing soup? Then I'll go for Kodak HCA - which isn't a developer, but dilute it enough, add a pinch of metol and a little soda - Hey Presto: Beutler's!

Eh, OK, I will permit it this time.

Oh good! Then I'll settle for lots of film choise - and a little pinch of this, a little pinch of that added to something else for a developer

i'd be happy with a handful of different films and only ansco 130.
after souping 35 sheets of film in xtol the other night, and souping the "twin in the film holder" in ansco 130, there isn't another developer for sheet film i would rather use.

I like to be able to choose different film speeds so I'll go with only one developer (assuming I'm the one that gets to pick it<g>)..

Neal Wydra

OK Neal, I'm feeling generous, you can pick the soup.

What would it be?

Peter

If the only film left was Tri-X Professional, then I would opt for one film and many developers.

If the only developer left was D-76 or HC-110, then I would opt for many films and one developer.

Otherwise... I don't know.
